Kindred is a members-only home swapping network that unlocks the ability to live a travel-rich lifestyle through the power of community. By exchanging primary residences with trusted peers, renters and owners alike can match with Kindred spirits and explore new destinations without breaking the bank.

We are on a mission to build a sharing economy that lives up to the name, and we’ve raised significant capital from some of the best investors in Silicon Valley, including Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, New Enterprise Associates, Bessemer Venture Partners, Caffeinated Capital, Elad Gil, and the founders of Opendoor, Figma, ClassPass, Clubhouse, Divvy, Gem, and Homebound.

The co-founders are proven leaders from the early team at proptech company Opendoor ($15B+ exit) and have each separately built and scaled products that today do $1B+ annual revenue combined.

We’re looking for the world’s top builders, executors, and believers to join us on this ride.

You can learn more about us in Forbes and TechCrunch.

The Role:

You will be our first legal team hire, reporting directly to our General Counsel to support our Product/Tech, Operations, and Marketing teams. This role requires someone with deep B2C marketplace experience who can navigate the complex regulatory landscape facing two-sided platforms while enabling rapid business growth. Given the evolving nature of our legal needs as we scale, you'll need to be comfortable providing support across multiple practice areas, with primary focus on product and operations teams and occasional marketing support. This remote role can be based anywhere in the US, with a preference for candidates located near our HQ in San Francisco, CA or in PST for collaboration purposes.

What You'll Do:

Product & Operations

  • Partner with product teams on feature launches and user experience legal requirements

  • Maintain and evolve terms of service, community standards, and other platform policies

  • Partner with Trust & Safety to develop frameworks for dispute resolution, content moderation, and incident response

  • Advise on platform liability issues and intermediary protections

Regulatory & Compliance

  • Navigate regulatory compliance across key markets in North America and the EU including consumer protection laws, privacy requirements, and lodging regulations

  • Provide occasional marketing compliance support, including platform advertising and promotional terms

Commercial & Partnership Legal

  • Lead contract negotiations for technology partnerships, marketing vendor agreements, and emerging supplier marketplace relationships

You may be a right fit for this role if you:

  • JD and bar admission in relevant jurisdiction

  • 7-10 years overall legal experience with 4+ years in-house experience at B2C technology companies. (Candidates with 5-6 years of highly relevant marketplace experience may be considered for a Counsel-level role.)

  • Two-sided marketplace or platform experience strongly preferred

  • Trust and safety, content moderation, or platform liability experience

  • Experience providing guidance on domestic and international privacy requirements, including GDPR and CCPA

  • Product legal experience including regulatory compliance guidance and developing customer-facing policies

  • Experience supporting marketing initiatives, including partnerships and promotions

  • Crisis management experience with platform incidents or regulatory matters

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and balance legal risk with business objectives

  • Demonstrated experience in effective cross-functional collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Early career law firm experience (2-3 years) in technology or transactional practice

  • International expansion experience

  • Experience with high growth startup environments and scaling challenges

Our Benefits:

At Kindred, we know that good things happen when we look out for one another. We offer our employees the following benefits:

  • Our opening spans more than one career level. The base salary offered depends on many factors, such as work experience, transferable skills, business needs and impact, and market demands.

  • A vibrant, inclusive, and highly skilled team that ferociously protects team chemistry

  • A culture of championship (vs. just mentorship), feedback, and continual development

  • Competitive cash compensation and equity

  • Comprehensive health benefits

  • Flexible vacation policy

  • Unlimited credits to stay at Kindred homes during your time as an employee

  • $4,000 annual travel stipend to use toward travel costs to stay at a Kindred home

  • Remote-flexible work environment. We encourage team members to travel and adventure, including working from Kindred HQ in San Francisco!

  • Regular offsites to co-locate with the team

We are committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all applicants and employees. Kindred does not discriminate on the basis of any protected characteristic, including race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, creed, age, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, medical condition, genetic information, family care or medical leave status, marital status, domestic partner status, military and veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by US federal, state or local laws, or the laws of the country or jurisdiction where you work. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
