Position Summary:

The Senior Corporate Accountant is a senior individual-contributor role responsible for the full-cycle accounting, reconciliation, and financial reporting activities of Abode Communities' corporate and multi-entity accounting operations. This role has an elevated scope in corporate accounting (accounts payable oversight, general ledger management, financial statement preparation and inter-entity reconciliations) and is expected to operate with a high degree of independence, sound judgment, and technical accuracy.

The Senior Corporate Accountant works closely with the Controller and Corporate Accounting Manager to strengthen internal controls, improve accounting processes, and ensure the accurate and timely close of the books across multiple entities. While this role does not carry formal supervisory responsibility, it is expected to review and provide guidance on the work of Accountant I / Staff Accountant-level colleagues and to serve as a point of escalation for complex accounting questions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for multiple entities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and organizational policy.
  • Own the monthly, quarterly and year-end close process for assigned entities, including preparation of financial statements, variance analysis, and balance sheet reconciliations. Responsible for preparing the quarterly corporate financial consolidation
  • Prepare the corporate monthly cost allocation (health insurance, worker’s comp, compliance fee, property Management fee, etc.)
  • Oversee and review accounts payable activity, including invoice processing, three-way matching, vendor payment issues, ensuring escalations are resolved timely and accurately.
  • Serve as a liaison to external auditors: prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation, respond to audit inquiries, and help drive annual audits to completion ahead of filing deadlines.
  • Analyze financial data and reporting for trends, discrepancies, and process improvement opportunities; recommend and help implement enhancements to accounting workflows and internal controls.
  • Manage and reconcile the receipt of grants, sponsorship, donations, etc.
  • Review and provide technical guidance on the work of Accountant I / Staff Accountant-level team members without formal supervisory authority; act as a subject-matter resource for complex accounting or reconciliation issues.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and ad hoc financial analysis as requested by the Corporate Accounting Manager, Controller, or Chief Financial Officer.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and affordable housing/regulatory reporting requirements relevant to the organization's portfolio.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to further Abode Communities' mission in the provision of affordable rental housing.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities. The Senior Corporate Accountant is expected to informally mentor and review the work of less experienced accounting staff, and may take on direct supervisory responsibility as the team grows.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle general ledger accounting and account reconciliations. Experience in affordable housing, corporate and nonprofit accounting, or multi-entity accounting strongly preferred. CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit/fund accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex reconciliations and multi-entity accounting independently, with minimal direction.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to identify root causes and recommend solutions for discrepancies or process gaps.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear financial reports and correspond professionally with lenders, auditors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office suite; experience with accounting/ERP systems such as MRI and AvidXchange strongly preferred.
  • AI Experience a plus

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
