About Us

Chess.com is one of the largest gaming sites in the world and the #1 platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess.

We are a team of 600+ fully remote people in 60+ countries working hard to serve the global chess community. We are here to support 250M+ chess players worldwide with the best possible product, content, and tools to serve the community!

We are a tech company. A gaming company. A content company. And we do it all with passion and commitment to the game. Above all we prize our mission-driven, flat, life-celebrating, no-corporate culture, and we look forward to meeting you and learning more about what you can bring to the team.

About You

We're looking for a Senior Conversion Copywriter to own the words our members read at the moments that matter most: the ad that gets them to download in the first place, the first time they open the app, the moment they consider going Premium, and the email that wins them back when they’ve lapsed. This is a craft role for a senior writer who can make monetization feel like a gift instead of a tollbooth, and who can flex from a punchy paid-social hook to a thoughtful lifecycle email without ever losing the thread of who we are.

What you'll do

  • Onboarding — Write the first words a new player ever reads from us, turning a fresh download into a member who feels right at home on the world's biggest chessboard.
  • Upsells & Monetization — Craft the upgrade flows, paywalls, and feature nudges for Premium and Diamond that respect the member's intelligence and time while clearly making the case for why more chess is worth it.
  • Special Offers & Sales — Own the copy for our big sale moments (Black Friday, holidays, Annual Sale, and the occasional "we just felt like it"), writing promos that drive revenue without ever feeling cheap or shouty.
  • Lifecycle Marketing (LCM) — Write the emails, push notifications, and in-product messages that bring lapsed players back to the board and keep active ones engaged. You'll turn "we miss you" into "I forgot how much I love this."
  • Paid Marketing Copywriting — Partner with our performance marketing team on the creative that drives acquisition: ad copy, video ad scripts and voiceover, and promo creative across Apple Search Ads, Meta, Google, and beyond. You'll write in volume and in variants, because here the best line is the one that wins the test.
  • Tone & Voice stewardship — Be a guardian of how Chess.com sounds. You'll set the bar, document the playbook, and help the rest of the team write copy that's unmistakably us: warm, clever, honest, and never gimmicky.

You'll partner closely with product, lifecycle, paid/performance marketing, design, and growth, and you'll live in the data. Good copy here isn't the copy you like best. It's the copy that wins the A/B test, lifts conversion, and still sounds human on the other side of it.

What we're looking for

  • 6+ years writing conversion-focused copy, ideally for a consumer product, subscription business, or app at scale.
  • A portfolio that proves it, with onboarding flows, upsell screens, lifecycle emails, promo campaigns, and paid ad creative. Bonus points if you can show the before, the after, and the lift.
  • Deep comfort with monetization, growth, and paid acquisition copy. You understand that a paywall is a conversation, not a wall, and you know how to make the ask without making the member feel squeezed.
  • Genuine fluency in tone and brand voice. You can shift from a 6-second ad hook to a confident upgrade pitch to a warm win-back email without missing a beat.
  • A data-literate brain. You write hypotheses, not just headlines, and you're energized (not threatened) by an A/B test that proves you wrong.
  • Self-direction. We're remote and async, and we trust people to own their work and close the loop.
  • Experience being edited, taking notes, and doing rewrites without an ego.
  • License to kill. Our Director of Copywriting prefers someone with field experience.
  • You actually like chess, or you're genuinely curious to. You don't need a rating, but you should care about the members we're writing for.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
