PlayStation Studios is looking for a Sr. Consumer Insights Researcher to join its growing Insights & Personalization team. This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape both the long-term portfolio strategy of the PlayStation Studios business unit and the game plans of top first-party studios owned by PlayStation.

We know that many people in UX and CI come from backgrounds with different experiences that might not seem "standard". We really value people who bring unique perspectives and add new knowledge to our team. So even if you feel that you don't meet all the points listed below, we'd still love to hear from you.

This role would report directly to the Sr. Director of User Research at PlayStation Studios. While the role is based primarily in our San Mateo offices, there is scope to be located in Seattle or Los Angeles. There may also be scope for remote work.

Responsibilities:

  • Own complex research projects, including projects that may require multiple studies, end-to-end from planning through communication and activation of findings and insights.
  • Translate complex multidisciplinary business partner questions into actionable research plans.
  • Design and conduct qualitative and quantitative research studies using a variety of research methods.
  • Analyze and present data to provide meaningful, business-relevant insights about players and the market.
  • Work with 3rd party vendors as needed to design and conduct research internationally, connect the dots in findings, ensure research quality, and drive the impact of actionable strategic insights.
  • Drive portfolio-level insights to inform PlayStation Studios’ long-term strategy and game development decisions.
  • Champion a player-first approach, advocating for data-driven decision-making across PlayStation Studios.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional peers from game studios and central corporate teams in User Research, Marketing, Product Management, Analytics, and Finance.
  • Triangulate syndicated data sources (e.g., market reports, industry trends, third-party analytics) to enhance consumer knowledge and identify gaps for primary research.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of user/market research experience in a business setting, including end-to-end quantitative and qualitative consumer insights research.
  • Experience independently driving global research to support brand or product development, including but not limited to positioning/messaging, audience segmentation, asset testing, strategy validation, etc.
  • Experience effectively managing vendors and external partners.
  • Strong gaming industry knowledge, including familiarity with market trends, and player behavior.
  • Proven track record to leverage consumer insights research to drive product-level or marketing-strategy-level impact.
  • Ability to work well in a cross-functional team environment and collaborate with other researchers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; presenting information concisely and effectively to people at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to tell compelling stories with data to an audience with diverse roles and familiarity with data.
  • Good organization skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in UCD, HCI, Social Sciences (e.g., Psychology, Communication, Sociology, Anthropology), or a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Marketing Analytics).

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
