Role: Sr. Cloud Engineer

Team: Technology (Central Infrastructure Engineering)

Location: US Remote

Travel: none anticipated

As a Senior Cloud Engineer on this Central Infrastructure Engineering team, you will help design, automate, and operate the foundational cloud infrastructure that powers the Ignite platform and the broader Health Catalyst engineering ecosystem. You’ll collaborate with a cross-functional team focused on enabling scalability, reliability, and security through automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and strong engineering practices.

This role combines deep cloud engineering expertise with a developer mindset. You’ll contribute to and support internal platform automation tools and services used throughout our environment provisioning and deployment processes. The ideal candidate brings hands-on Databricks and Azure experience, strong automation skills with Terraform and pipelines, and familiarity with modern software development practices.

What You Will Own

  • Collaborate with the Platform Services team to design, build, and maintain the cloud foundations that support Ignite and other internal engineering systems.
  • Deploy and manage Azure and Databricks infrastructure using Terraform, Azure DevOps, custom services and automated pipelines.
  • Implement and maintain platform automation, infrastructure provisioning, and configuration tools.
  • Manage Databricks workspaces, including networking, access control, and compute configuration.
  • Support the reliability, observability, and scalability of platform components through proactive monitoring and automation.
  • Partner with other engineering teams to integrate platform tooling into CI/CD workflows.
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call rotations to ensure availability and stability of critical platform services.

Important Technical Skills

  • Databricks (1+ years required): Workspace setup, networking, access control, compute configuration, and Terraform automation.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Terraform (required), Azure CLI, and scripting for configuration and provisioning.
  • Architecture: An understanding of best practices for building well-architected solutions on Azure or public cloud environments.
  • Azure DevOps: Required experience with pipeline creation, YAML templates, and environment deployments.
  • Cloud Infrastructure (3+ years required): Hands-on experience with Azure (preferred) or another major public cloud.
  • Networking: Solid understanding of VNets, subnets, private endpoints, NAT, DNS, and routing.
  • Security & Governance: Implementing secure access patterns, managing secrets, and enforcing compliance standards.
  • DevOps Practices: CI/CD pipelines, source control, automated testing, and environment promotion workflows.
  • Software Development: PowerShell, SQL, YAML, and other scripting languages.

Nice-to-Have Technical Skills

  • Software Development: Experience with .NET (C#), Python - supporting internal tools and automation services.
  • Automation Frameworks: Familiarity with Ansible or other configuration management tools.
  • Identity & Access Management: Understanding of Azure Entra ID or Okta in cloud environments.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or third-party observability tools.
  • Software Development Life Cycle: Familiarity with pull request workflows, version control branching strategies, and automated testing frameworks.

Information Security and Compliance Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with required internal, Information Security, HIPAA, and Acceptable Use Policy training.
  • Adhere to and comply with the organization's Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Safeguard organizational systems by identifying and reporting potential security risks.
  • Follow established policies and best practices for protecting data and system assets.
