Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Business Intelligence Engineer II to join our Data team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

About the role

The Business Intelligence Engineer II will assess and optimize Oscar's Business Intelligence platform, which includes Looker and dbt on BigQuery. You will bridge the gap between business requirements and technical design, ensuring the platform is both user-friendly and high-performing.

You will report to the Associate Director, Analytics Engineering.

Work Location:

Oscar is a blended work culture where everyone, regardless of work type or location, feels connected to their teammates, our culture and our mission.

If you live within commutable distance to our New York City office (in Hudson Square), our Tempe office (off the 101 at University Dr), or our Los Angeles office (in Marina Del Rey), you will be expected to come into the office at least two days each week. Otherwise, this is a remote / work-from-home role.

You must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Note, this list of states is subject to change. #LI-Remote

Pay Transparency:

The base pay for this role is: $119,200-$156,450 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities
  • Champion development best practices for Looker development.
  • Scope CI/CD tools, automation, processes and guidelines to ensure adherence.
  • Level-up our existing dashboard infrastructure, partnering with developers to improve dashboard usability, visualization, and query performance.
  • Lead the maintenance, optimization and expansion of our Business Intelligence platform (Looker) and LookML semantic layer.
  • Partner with stakeholders to expand BI content areas, taking in business requirements, maintaining alignment, and delivering performant, scalable products that meet our end-user needs.
  • Scale our business intelligence stack by improving query performance, overseeing the administration, supporting duties necessary to service the developers and end-users of our platform, and finding opportunities to build tools and automation to reduce the amount of inbound requests.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding and expertise of Oscar's analytics technologies, contributing to the continuous improvement of Oscar's analytics ecosystem.
  • Provide training and mentorship to empower data scientists and data engineers, to promote a culture of excellence in business intelligence and encourage skill development.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in Analytics Engineering, Business Intelligence, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working with a variety of database languages, including SQL, DDL and DML with demonstrated ability to efficiently transform data and databases.
  • 3+ years of experience working with a variety of business intelligence platforms, such as Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, or others.
  • 2+ years of experience developing in a semantic modeling language (e.g. LookML).
  • 1+ years of experience working with and presenting to non-technical stakeholders.
  • 1+ years experience with Python or another OOP/scripting language.
Bonus Points
  • Experience integrating DBT and Looker (or equivalent ETL-to-BI integration).
  • Experience working with healthcare data, analytics, and reporting.
  • Experience with GCP.
  • A background in healthcare and/or insurance.
  • Experience communicating updates and resolutions to technical and non-technical end users, exhibited through at least 1 project or initiative

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
