The Opportunity

Monstro is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to help architect and scale the intelligent infrastructure behind our AI-native financial platform. As one of the first core engineers at Monstro, you’ll play a pivotal role in defining our backend architecture, building robust systems, and ensuring performance, scalability, and security across products that serve both consumers and financial institutions.

This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll own backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure—partnering closely with product, design, and AI teams to turn vision into execution. You’ll be instrumental in transforming how financial data flows through Monstro’s ecosystem and how intelligence is delivered to users in real time.

If you thrive in environments where clarity, ownership, and speed matter—and want to build category-defining technology from the ground up—this is the opportunity to make an immediate, lasting impact.

About Monstro

Monstro, headquartered in New York City, is an AI-native fintech/banktech platform transforming how people and institutions manage money.

Our mission is to democratize access to high-quality financial insight—giving every individual and institution the intelligence, tools, and automation to make better decisions across wealth, tax, legal, and investment.

For financial institutions, Monstro serves as the *intelligence layer*—a unified platform that unlocks real-time insights, automation, and revenue opportunities across their client base. For consumers, we deliver personalized, always-on financial guidance and the ability to take action—all within a seamless, next-generation mobile experience.

This B2B2C model drives deeper engagement, higher retention, and scalable growth for institutions, while empowering everyday users to make smarter, more confident financial decisions.

Our team brings together leaders from fintech, wealth management, and AI-driven technology companies—combining decades of experience building and scaling platforms that have transformed industries.

Responsibilities
  • Backend Architecture & Infrastructure

    • Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and integrations.

    • Lead key architectural decisions on infrastructure, data flow, and cloud deployment strategy.

    • Implement infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps best practices.

    • Drive observability, monitoring, and uptime standards across backend services.

  • Cloud & Security

    • Build secure, compliant systems optimized for a fintech-grade environment.

    • Implement authentication, encryption, and access control across backend components.

    • Manage multi-region or global cloud deployments on AWS (or equivalent).
  • Ingestion, orchestration, and infrastructure

    • Design and implement robust multi-modal document processing systems that handle heterogeneous file formats (PDFs, images, HTML, XML) with automatic schema inference, content extraction validation, and graceful degradation for malformed inputs, maintaining 99.9% pipeline uptime SLA.
    • Own ingestion from APIs, file drops, partner feeds, and scheduled jobs with monitoring, retries, and alerting.

    • Implement data quality checks for schema, ranges, and nulls, and document lineage and SLAs.

    • Own and harden the infrastructure that supports ETL pipelines, storage systems, and serving services.

  • Development & Delivery

    • Translate product and AI requirements into backend capabilities that power intelligent user experiences.

    • Collaborate with AI and Data teams to integrate machine learning pipelines and real-time processing.

    • Contribute to front-end or cross-functional code as needed, with a back-end-first focus.
  • Security, compliance, and governance

    • Handle sensitive financial and personal data with access controls, auditing, and retention policies.

  • Collaboration & Team Growth

    • Partner closely with Product, Design, and Executive teams to deliver on Monstro’s roadmap.

    • Contribute to technical documentation and system clarity.

    • Help recruit, mentor, and shape the foundation of Monstro’s engineering culture.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with deep backend expertise.

  • Proven success designing and scaling distributed, cloud-native systems (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

  • Experience with databases (SQL/NoSQL), caching, and performance optimization.
  • Hands-on DevOps experience—CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform (or similar).

  • Strong understanding of security, authentication, and data privacy standards.
  • Experience collaborating with AI, product, and data teams on technical integration.

  • Clear communication and documentation skills; thrives in fast-paced startup environments.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Exposure to AI/ML infrastructure, event-driven architecture, or real-time systems.

  • Early-stage startup experience or familiarity with building engineering orgs from scratch.
  • Interest in fintech, wealth management, or regulated data systems.

  • Experience with front-end frameworks (React, Next.js) or mobile integration.
Why Monstro?
  • Ownership & Impact: As an early technical hire, you’ll shape Monstro’s architecture and future scale.

  • Category-Defining Work: Build the systems that power next-generation financial intelligence.

  • Mission-Driven: Help redefine how people and institutions understand and act on their finances.
  • Compensation: $165K–$215K base + top-tier equity

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
