The Senior Backend Engineer will design and build backend services to improve seller onboarding and engagement, lead technical initiatives, and mentor other engineers.
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Activation and Engagement Server Team is a critical part of Square's Growth Product organization, with a mission to help more sellers use Square more. As part of the Growth Product team's strategy to Simplify, Automate, and Graduate seller experiences, we build and maintain the backend infrastructure that guides sellers from signup through their first payment and beyond into ongoing product engagement. We're directly contributing to Square's growth initiatives focused on increasing new volume and seller success. Our primary goal is to improve onboarding and engagement for Square sellers while maintaining the reliability, uptime, and scalability of critical backend services powering onboarding flows.
We're addressing significant opportunities in the seller onboarding journey by building robust, extensible APIs that enable web onboarding, point of sale, and international teams to deliver seamless activation experiences that convert and engage sellers at scale. Our work spans the entire seller journey from acquisition through activation and engagement, focusing on automating complex workflows and removing friction from critical seller moments.
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help us scale our platform, lead technical initiatives, and mentor the next generation of engineers as we accelerate Square's growth.
