About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer to design, deploy, and optimize production-grade AI systems powering Sully.ai’s real-time voice and medical agent technologies. This role is deeply technical and end-to-end — from data to model to service — and will help us build reliable, low-latency ML infrastructure integrated directly into healthcare workflows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain end-to-end AI/ML systems (data → model → inference → service).

  • Build robust evaluation, monitoring, and feedback pipelines for production ML.

  • Integrate LLMs, retrieval systems, and semantic/voice pipelines into customer-facing products.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product and Infra to translate ML trade-offs into product outcomes.

  • Drive experimentation speed and model reliability through CI/CD, metrics, and instrumentation.

Hard Requirements

  • Demonstrable track record deploying AI/ML models in production.

  • Strong software foundation (TypeScript, APIs, distributed systems).

  • Familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face or similar).

  • Experience building inference, evaluation, and monitoring pipelines.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with LLMs, embeddings, or RAG pipelines in SaaS or startup environments.

  • Familiarity with telephony APIs (Twilio/SIP/VoIP) and real-time ASR/NLU pipelines.

  • Experience in healthcare, call center, or real-time conversational AI systems.

First-Month Focus

  • Deploy and optimize a low-latency inference pipeline (<0.5 s target).

  • Audit and improve evaluation metrics, drift detection, and guardrail coverage.

  • Partner with Product to define success metrics for reliability and responsiveness in voice workflows.

Success OKRs (90 Days)

  • Deliver production-ready LLM or voice AI systems integrated with Sully’s core stack.

  • Establish automated evaluation and monitoring tied to user feedback loops.

  • Reduce model latency and error rate by > 30% while maintaining accuracy benchmarks.

Culture Fit

  • Persistent, driven problem solver.

  • Willing to push back on leadership to defend quality/timelines.

  • Thrives in high-ambiguity, fast-paced startup environments.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
