Description
We are seeking a U.S.-based Sales Tax Accountant to join our global finance team. This role reports directly to the CFO and is responsible for managing all aspects of indirect tax compliance across multiple entities and jurisdictions. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Avalara, in-depth knowledge of sales tax requirements specific to the software and SaaS industry, and experience managing voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) with state authorities.

This position requires a professional who can navigate complex accounting environments, manage multi-entity compliance, and ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of all sales tax filings and related processes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple U.S. states and jurisdictions.
  • Manage sales tax registrations, nexus reviews, and voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) with state and local authorities.
  • Ensure correct tax treatment and jurisdictional mapping for software and SaaS transactions.
  • Maintain and reconcile tax accounts, ensuring accuracy of general ledger postings and tax liabilities.
  • Implement, configure, and maintain Avalara (or similar systems) to automate tax calculations and improve compliance efficiency.
  • Review sales transactions for correct tax coding and exemption certificate handling.
  • Monitor changes in U.S. state and local tax laws, advising leadership on potential exposure and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with accounting and finance teams to ensure proper integration of tax processes across multiple entities.
  • Support audits, respond to tax authority inquiries, and prepare supporting documentation.
  • Assist the CFO with tax planning initiatives, M&A integrations, and process improvement projects.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in U.S. sales and use tax, ideally in the software or SaaS industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of Avalara; experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting system integrations.
  • Proven experience managing multi-entity sales tax compliance in a complex organizational structure.
  • Hands-on experience with voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) and state nexus evaluations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems such as Sage Intacct or NetSuite.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional environment.
  • CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in and reside within the United States.

Benefits

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
