Summary

GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized Physical AI company headquartered in Los Angeles, building Factory SuperIntelligence (FSI) through systems that learn, adapt, and develop genuine process intelligence across every part they touch. Our robots take on the tedious, hazardous, and ergonomically demanding work that has kept manufacturing dependent on a shrinking skilled workforce, delivering superhuman performance. Robotics has a demo problem. GMR doesn't. Our systems are in active production today, adapting autonomously to real geometries, real materials, and real process variation without reprogramming. We deliver our system through a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model that converts capital expenditure into an operating subscription, making Physical AI accessible to the manufacturers who need it most. We hire people who want to solve hard physical problems at an industrial scale.

The Robotics Engineer: Government Projects will enable customer success by leading the implementation, deployment, and support activities of innovative robotic manufacturing systems for surface treatment applications.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers to understand their manufacturing processes, requirements, and constraints, gathering critical data including measurements, CAD files, and documentation

  • Execute proof of concept projects that demonstrate the capabilities of GrayMatter's robotic technologies

  • Own robotic manufacturing cell design end-to-end, collaborating with software design and mechatronics teams to optimize for reachability, cycle time, and efficiency

  • Design and oversee fabrication of custom end-of-arm tooling and work holding fixtures from concept through testing

  • Configure GMR-AI software to generate optimized tool paths and trajectories for new applications

  • Job will require approximately 50% software work and 50% mechatronics/mechanical engineering/hardware work

  • Rapidly test and prototype new inspection sensors, tools, and processes, working with sensor vendors to evaluate emerging technologies

  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain controls components including sensors, PCs, and third party device controllers

  • Help develop new process recipes to accommodate different materials and geometries

  • Partner with GMR software engineers to prototype new ideas, processes, and methods

  • Work with product and AI teams to continuously improve customer experience with GMR hardware

  • Create documentation, manuals, and educational content

  • Travel to customer sites as required

Export Control Requirements

In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

  • Business competent (intermediate to advanced) programming knowledge in C++ and Python

  • Ability to solve technical problems effectively, efficiently, and independently

  • Demonstrated experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings

  • Familiar with industrial facilities and equipment

  • Effective communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites as required by the role

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field with a focus or specialization in robotics

  • Experience with sensor integration and calibration for robotics applications, including 3D vision systems, LiDAR, and inertial measurement units.

  • Industry experience within a manufacturing environment working with industrial automation, manufacturing process development, manufacturing engineering or similar

  • Experience in process engineering within a manufacturing environment

  • Experience programming 6DOF robots for various surface finishing applications

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
