Blockstream was founded in 2014 by Dr. Adam Back and a group of fellow cryptographers and engineers who were passionate about Bitcoin and its potential to change the future of finance. Focusing on building fundamental Bitcoin infrastructure, Blockstream quickly became one of the industry's leading technology powerhouses.
Blockstream is transforming traditional financial systems by equipping enterprises and consumers with Bitcoin-based solutions that enhance efficiency, security, and scalability. Our vision is to empower the world with tools that strengthen financial security, streamline everyday use, and unlock new opportunities for growth. In pursuit of our vision, we’ve built a full stack of innovative products on top of the Bitcoin protocol, from layer-2 projects like Liquid and Core Lightning, to end-user software and hardware wallets like Green and Jade. Our brand stands for innovation in the Bitcoin community, and we’re growing our team to accelerate the future.
Blockstream recently launched an Asset Management Division that will manage Bitcoin and blockchain assets to achieve exceptional returns for investors and bridge the gap between Bitcoin and mainstream finance. We are looking for a Research & Trading Analyst to join our team. This is a 2-4 year role that will be responsible for assisting with operations, trade execution and original research across a wide array of digital asset platforms, both centralized and decentralized. At the end of the term, the candidate will be expected to return to graduate school to continue their studies.

What You Will Be Doing (Responsibilities):

  • Maintain accurate records of trades, positions, and P&Ls for reporting purposes.
  • Generate reports and dashboards, highlighting key metrics such as borrow / lend rates, portfolio correlations, returns, volatility, and risk-adjusted performance.
  • Ensure adherence to the fund's risk management framework and trading guidelines.
  • Ensure all trading activities comply with the hedge fund’s internal policies.
  • Conduct in-depth research on Bitcoin and broader digital asset markets, including on-chain analysis, macroeconomic trends, and market sentiment.
  • Analyze derivatives markets (futures, options, perpetual swaps) and provide insights into positioning, volatility, and liquidity trends.
  • Monitor market news and movements, identify trading opportunities, and assist in real-time trade execution.
  • Backtest and refine trading strategies using historical data and advanced analytics.
  • Monitor and assist with risk management associated with Bitcoin and related trading positions, including exposure limits, margin requirements, and counterparty risks.
  • Assist with the implementation of call levels, hedging strategies, and other risk mitigation techniques to protect the fund’s capital in volatile market conditions.
  • Contribute to the development of research reports, trading memos, and investment theses for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the Firm as a Bitcoin ambassador at conferences and meetups.

What We Look For In You (Required Qualifications):

  • College degree in a relevant field, such as Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Data Science, Data Analytics, or Financial Mathematics.
  • Strong skills in Python, SQL, Excel, and Tableau.
  • Highly resourceful and internally motivated individual with a proven ability to deliver results independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • A foundational understanding of Bitcoin and blockchain concepts and markets, with a keen interest in staying abreast of industry developments.
  • Conceptual understanding and keen interest in both fundamental and technical analysis.
  • We value long-term thinking, quantitative reasoning, and team-oriented individuals.

Nice To Haves (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Strong attention to detail and a high bar for your craft.
  • Strategic thinker with strong relationship-building skills.
  • Comfortable being a sole contributor to high-impact research and trading projects.
  • Interest in pursuing a CAIA, CFA, CMT or FRM Charterholder designation.

If you don’t tick every box above, we’d still encourage you to apply. We’re building a diverse team whose skills balance and complement one another.

Blockstream is a fully remote company, but the Asset Management Division will be centered in Menlo Park California and London. We’re focused on hiring within these hubs and people hired from these hub offices are expected to come into the office five days per week.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
