Interested in working with a groundbreaking company that’s focused on decarbonizing the atmosphere? CarbonCapture Inc. develops and deploys direct air capture (DAC) machines that can be connected in large arrays to remove massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With a patented modular open systems architecture, our DAC platform allows for plug-and-play upgrades, mass production, unlimited scalability, and rapid technology iterations.

We are seeking a Research Scientist specializing in sorbent development, characterization, and testing to join our team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of advancing our Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology by designing, synthesizing, and optimizing innovative sorbent materials. Your work will directly enhance the efficiency, stability, and scalability of our DAC systems, making a meaningful impact on climate change.

Responsibilities

  • Sorbent Development: Design and synthesize novel sorbent materials for CO2 capture from ambient air. Optimize sorbent properties to improve adsorption capacity, selectivity, and regeneration efficiency.
  • Characterization: Conduct comprehensive characterization of sorbents using advanced techniques such as BET, TGA, FTIR, DSC, DVS, and breakthrough testing to evaluate physical and chemical properties.
  • Testing and Validation: Design and conduct experiments to test sorbent performance in lab-scale systems. Analyze results to assess effectiveness, stability, and longevity under various conditions.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze experimental data to draw insights and provide recommendations for further development. Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including material scientists, chemical engineers, and process developers, to integrate sorbents into DAC processes successfully.
  • Innovation: Stay updated on advancements in sorbent materials and DAC technologies. Propose innovative ideas to enhance sorbent performance and system efficiency.

Requirements

  • Masters degree or Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional working experience in sorbent development, characterization, and testing, preferably in CO2 capture from the atmosphere or point sources.
  • Strong background in material synthesis, surface chemistry, method development, experimental design, and adsorption processes.
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques such as BET, TGA, FTIR, DSC, DVS, and related methods.
  • Experience with lab-scale and pilot-scale testing of sorbent materials.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex data clearly and concisely.
  • A passion for addressing climate change and contributing to sustainable technologies.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
