Description:

Who we are:
The Gladstone Institutes is a distinguished independent, not-for-profit research institution dedicated to advancing human health through cutting-edge medical research and education. Our work spans neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, immunology, and stem cell biology, with a focus on overcoming disease. With a team of approximately 600 members, including renowned leaders in science and biomedicine, Gladstone operates across five institutes, alongside various centers and programs. Located at the Mission Bay Campus in an award-winning building, Gladstone offers competitive salaries and benefits, providing an optimal environment for individuals to realize their full potential and make a meaningful impact on global health.

About the role:
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to work in a dynamic, collaborative environment using cutting edge methods and technology to unravel neurodegenerative diseases. This role is very diverse, multidisciplinary and dynamic.

At the heart of our lab is a novel robotic microscopy (RM) system that can track numerous molecular features of cells over time (an example of how RM is used is found here).  RM allows us to extract various types of biological information about how cells grow, mature and behave in response to candidate drugs or genetic perturbations. We then use ML approaches to extract features from our iPSC models to help identify and distinguish disease phenotypes. We have collaborations with many industries and academic groups, publish our work in high profile scientific journals, and present our work at international conferences.

What you will do:

  • Help drive the scientific goals and objectives of several projects to using high throughput, human models of neurological disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Parkinson’s Disease (PD).
  • This person will have experience using CRIPSRi, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and ideally experience with live cell imaging.
  • Using a wide variety of tools, you will help orchestrate and execute a platform to model the process of neurodegeneration.
  • You will work closely with our software engineers using machine learning (ML) or other approaches to phenotype disease signatures from patient cells.

What you will need:

  • MS in a field of Biological Sciences or Engineering (required)
  • PhD in a field of Biological Sciences or Engineering (preferred)
  • Critical thinking and ability to design and execute experiments independently
  • Highly organized and strong data analysis expertise
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Team player
  • Must have molecular and cell biology expertise
  • Self-driven and passionate about science
  • At least 3 years research experience in research biology
  • Widefield and/or confocal microscopy experience
  • Must have previous cell culture experience at a minimum of 2 years
  • The desire to learn and work on a fast-paced project.
  • Experience with managing others, designing and overseeing experiments from start to finish, growing and differentiating iPSCs, and some experience using R or python.

What we prefer:

  • Experience in R or Python
  • iPSC culturing and differentiation into specific cell types
  • Experience with live cell imaging

Hiring Range:

RA I - $27 - $31hr.

RA II - $68-$80K

RA III - $75K - $88K

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
