Improving Health Care for Every New Yorker

United Hospital Fund (UHF) is dedicated to creating an effective and equitable healthcare system for all New Yorkers. As an independent nonprofit, we analyze public policy, unite diverse stakeholders, and support innovative programs to improve health and healthcare. Our mission includes breaking down barriers in health policy and delivery to ensure equitable health opportunities. UHF’s emerging new line of Medicaid work seeks to achieve this vision by bridging and advancing quality and equity and supporting the delivery of health-related social needs (HRSN) screening and services.

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Analyst (Statistical Programmer) to join our team and develop and execute data analysis to enhance Medicaid program effectiveness. In this role, you will translate complex data into user-friendly visualizations, guiding informed decision-making. This role involves conducting analyses aligned with established analytic frameworks, transforming findings into audience-friendly visuals, and identifying gaps in physical, behavioral, and HRSN service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write SQL and R Code: Perform common data cleaning and transformation tasks in order to understand data, detect and address data quality issues, and build analysis-ready data sets. Develop efficient project code and programming techniques and automate processes to build the department’s codebase and capacity for effectively working with large and/or messy datasets.
  • Develop Data Expertise: Develop deep knowledge of diverse data sources, including Medicaid claims, HRSN screening/assessment/referral data, quality measures, provider networks, vital statistics, and population-level survey data. Use this knowledge to contribute to team plans and code for checking and understanding data and defining measures and metrics.
  • Implement Data Governance Policies: Write code and project documentation, conduct code reviews, implement version control practices, and other tasks to ensure the accuracy of results
  • Create Quality Improvement Metrics: Write SQL code to aggregate and analyze data within analytic frameworks to assess healthcare quality, equity outcomes, and disparities in physical, behavioral, and HRSN service delivery.
  • Data Visualization & Communication: Create Tableau dashboards and detailed narratives, ensuring data is presented effectively for various audiences, including internal teams, key stakeholders, and the public.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of four years in a programmer role in healthcare and/or social policy research
  • Health Data Expertise: Understanding of health data sources, including common data quality issues, techniques to detect and address them, and their implications for analyses
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience writing advanced code in SQL and R to work with large datasets (more than one million records) in cloud-based platforms.
  • Reproducibility: Experience with version control tools such as Git and ability to create advanced (e.g., nested, higher-order) functions in R
  • Programming Mindset: Enjoys writing code and solving complex data cleaning and transformation problems
  • Data Security Knowledge: Experience adhering to complex data security protocols
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to convey results and their meaning effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Analytical Insight: Ability to apply context to results and identify issues in data most relevant to improving service delivery
  • Team Player: Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in data science, health informatics, public health, public policy, public administration, or a related field (equivalent professional or lived experience may be considered in place of a degree)
  • Other Data Expertise: Experience with other data sources, such as survey data, administrative data from human service programs, or publicly available data (e.g., Census)
  • Data Visualization Skills: Proficiency in Tableau or other data visualization tools

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
