The big picture: Axios is a growth-stage company dedicated to providing trustworthy, essential news in a format that respects readers' time. We're hiring a reporter to cover Phoenix as part of our growing local news initiative.

Why it matters: This reporter will help Phoenix residents understand what's happening in their own backyards, getting readers smarter, faster on the news, events and local folkways that matter most to them. 

Go deeper: We're looking for a skilled reporter who wants to own the biggest conversations in their community and write newsletters that become the talk of the town. Requirements include:

  • Co-authoring a daily Axios newsletter full of insights and scoops that matter most to Phoenix.
  • Interest in covering many aspects of life in Phoenix.
  • Experimenting with and leveraging AI for reporting and newsletter production.
  • Writing conversationally, in Axios' Smart Brevity style. 
  • Helping to build Axios Local and shaping how our product evolves.

Worthy of your time: Ideal candidates will operate with a startup mentality and an entrepreneurial spirit, and have the following skills:

  • Experience covering Phoenix.
  • Excellent sources and the desire to create new ones.
  • Ability to break news and create conceptual scoops.
  • Omnivorous curiosity about your hometown, no matter how long you've lived there.
  • Ideas, ideas, ideas.
  • Comfort flexing some voice and personality in your writing.
  • Proven experience working in a fast-paced news environment and on deadline.
  • The desire to make yourself indispensable to local readers and to Axios Local.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $60,000 - $100,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
