Overview & Responsibilities

Purpose of the Job

The Regional Application Engineering (AE) Manager is responsible for the process of rerates and modifications proposal development and for supervising the activities of the Application Engineers.  The function manages application engineering load, prioritizing departmental activities on a continual basis to make the most effective use of available resources.  It is the Regional AE Manager's responsibility to monitor proposal activity and report and assess Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on a continual basis in order to identify and implement process performance improvements.   In coordination with the Engineered Solutions (ES) Commercial Operations Manager, other ES Regional AE Managers, and the ES Leadership Team, the Regional AE Manager is responsible for developing strategies to best exploit the sales potential of the region.  The Regional AE Manager will support and provide input to the Commercial Operations Manager for the development of the forecasting and business planning process.

Nature of the Job

The Regional AE Manager supervises the technical and commercial content of proposals and manages the tools and processes employed by the Application Engineers in proposal development.  For technical aspects this position maintains contact with and works in coordination with Ebara Elliott Energy (EEE) technical resources in R&D, New Apparatus Regional Application Engineering Managers, Core Application Engineering and Product Engineering to maintain and develop team application knowledge and expertise, appropriate proposal tools and technology, and to ensure the technical integrity of all ES proposals.  For commercial aspects this position maintains contact and coordinates the ES Commercial Operations Manager, other ES Regional AE Managers, Contract Administration, and Sales to ensure appropriate completion of all commercial aspects of the proposal, including market level pricing, margin assessment, delivery, terms and conditions, and risk assessment.  It is the responsibility of the Regional AE Manager in coordination with the Commercial Operations Manager to identify and implement the training and development requirements of all direct reports. 

Background and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering as a minimum.

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience within the turbomachinery or related field.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Commercial acumen and customer facing experience.

  • Ability to work cross functionally within and outside of EEE to achieve joint objectives and resolve issues, especially ability to work effectively with sales and customers.

  • Ability to analyze new business opportunities in order to prioritize departmental activities and resources.

  • Ability to identify and evaluate technical and commercial risk, and develop strategies to mitigate such risks.

  • Knowledge and administration of Company policies and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of all common office software packages in addition to specialist software tools employed in the proposal development process.

  • Previous supervisory experience is desirable.

Specific Job Responsibilities/Competencies

  • Supervise the technical and commercial rerates and modifications proposal development process.

  • Direct the application engineering function so as to respond to EEE customers in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • Supervise senior application engineers and application engineers.

  • Identify and implement the training and development requirements of all direct reports. 

  • Maintain and analyze key performance indicators to identify and implement process performance improvements.

  • Coordinate with EEE technical resources in R&D, New Apparatus Regional Application Engineering Managers, Core Application Engineering and Product Engineering to maintain and develop team application knowledge and expertise, appropriate proposal tools and technology, and ensure the technical integrity of all ES proposals.  

  • Coordinate with the ES Commercial Operations Manager, other ES Regional AE Managers,  Contract Administration, Sales, and ES Regional Technical Leaders to establish commercial strategy and ensure alignment of all commercial aspects of the proposal, including market level pricing, margin assessment, delivery, terms and conditions, and risk assessment.  

  • Manage the hand-over of new orders to the ES Operations team.

  • Support the development of new business opportunities through contribution to specific project meetings and also through more general account management activities.

  • Participate in customer alliances.

  • Travel as required in support of meetings and negotiations. 

Contact with Others

  • Day-to-day contact with ES Leadership Team (Director, Commercial Operations Manager, Project Management & Engineering, Product Engineering, other Regional AE Managers, Operations Manager, Engineering Manager, Drafting Supervisors, Regional Technical Leaders, Purchasing & Logistics), Sales, Technical Services, EP Application Engineering Managers, Core Group Application Engineering, R&D, Group Marketing, Business Development, Cost Estimating and Cost Development Group, Production Planning, Focus Factories, Packaged Solutions, Materials Engineering,  Quality Assurance, and Test Engineering.

  • Frequent contact with outside vendors for purchased auxiliaries.

  • Frequent customer contact.

  • Occasional EEE Executive level contact.

  • Occasional domestic and international travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This is a supervisory position with responsibility for hiring, discipline, discharge, performance appraisal, personnel development, and salary planning.

  • Direct reports are composed of senior application engineers, application engineers. Total group size is approximately ten to fifteen people.
