Project Engineer - Major Projects

Job Summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Los Angeles Refinery (LAR) located in Carson, CA has an opening for a Senior Level Project Engineer in the Major Project Group. This team will develop significant projects that will increase refinery efficiency, improve sustainability, reduce emissions.  This position will be assigned as a Project Manager/Project Engineer to the Carson Electrification and/or LAR Intertie Projects. The Major Project Group portfolio is a significant opportunity for a project professional, or someone who wants to obtain major project experience, to get in on the ground floor of the development of a Major Project.  The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls are required only a few times a year and support of TAR once a year.

                

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply project management and engineering skills and knowledge in all phases of projects from conception to closeout.

  • Manage multiple assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.

  • Interact with project team members and key refinery stakeholders to ensure that project scope is clearly defined and meets the requirements of the end users.

  • Manage and provide direction to engineering contractors.

  • Initiate and participate in management of change (MOC) reviews for applicable projects.

  • Review design drawings, construction packages, and specifications and coordinate input from stakeholders.

  • Participate in technical reviews with project engineers, engineering firms and equipment suppliers.

  • Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable Marathon and other refining industry specifications and standards.

  • Collaborate with Project Controls group for project scheduling, estimating, cost management and forecasting.

  • Coordinate with Procurement in development of contracting plan including engineering services and equipment sourcing.

  • Maintain accurate and current project documentation.

  • Provide documentation and support to Operations and Maintenance department so they can develop start-up manuals, operating and maintenance procedures, and equipment training.

  • Support construction and commissioning of assigned projects through field walks, responding to RFI, and approving installations before turning over to operations.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and at least 7 years of Engineering project management experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry OR Must have a High School Diploma and 12 years of Project Management experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry.(Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Must be self-directed and motivated individual who has good understanding of the project management processes and experience in refinery or petrochemical equipment and processes.

  • Good communication skills are require due to job requirement of interfacing with project teams that include all refinery departments, engineering contractors, and equipment vendors and manufacturers.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

  • The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls are required only a few times a year and support of TAR once a year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience Developing and Executing Major Projects over $25MM is preferred.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications. This could be a Grade 12 or Grade 13.
