Your Role

As a Project Architect in Gensler Oakland’s Lifestyle Studio, you will lead the feasibility, design development and technical delivery of innovative hospitality and retail environments for clients across many sectors of our industry, and for projects with varying complexity. • Help evolve design strategies that respond to emerging client needs, new technologies, and changing customer experiences

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of clients’ program requirements, brand standards, and operational needs to guide project teams

  • Lead day-to-day project coordination across clients, internal teams, consultants, and vendors, working closely with the Project Manager and Technical Director to support successful project delivery

  • Coordinate and guide teams of various sizes through documentation and delivery phases, anticipating and resolving complex technical and design challenges

  • Produce and oversee coordinated drawing sets, specifications, and project manuals while maintaining quality control across all documentation

  • Manage and contribute to construction administration activities including site observations, submittal reviews, RFIs, and contractor coordination

  • Interface with permitting and building officials and lead construction meetings with clients and contractors

  • Mentor and guide junior staff, fostering clear communication, professional growth, and high-quality work

  • Identify and elevate complex code, constructability, and coordination issues, working closely with the Technical Director and project leadership to resolve them

  • Work closely with management and studio leadership to advance project outcomes and strengthen your technical and professional development

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in Architecture

  • Must be a licensed architect in the State of California

  • 10+ years of related experience, spanning diverse retail project types (both interior and exterior), along with the demonstrated ability to successfully execute and lead hospitality projects.

  • Proficient in Revit

  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), and MS Office

  • Strong design sensibility with demonstrated ability to execute design intent with precision and attention to detail

  • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, and building systems

  • Strong understanding of interior construction methods and the ability to produce technical documents that succinctly describe the work to be done

  • Experience coordinating complex retail environments including storefront systems, custom millwork, and integrated brand elements

  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-management skills

  • Desire to mentor junior staff

  • Commitment to incorporating a sustainability mindset in all design decisions

  • Team player who actively contributes to a collaborative and fun office culture

  • LEED accreditation and experience preferred

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
