SUMMARY:

The Production Designer works closely with directors, producers, and the visual development team to visually explore, create and design all aspects of feature animated films. This may include: sets, locations, props, characters, visual effects, color and overall style.

Sony Pictures Animation is a pre-production animation studio based in Culver City, California, creating both feature animation and animated series with artists from around the world. We pride ourselves on empowering filmmakers to lead the creative process, and allowing the hand of the artist to be truly felt, with the goal of producing bold and innovative visual storytelling.

Responsibilities:
  • The Production Designer will set the look of the project and direct the crew to help realize ideas from concept to finished presentation through the use of drawings (including rough sketches, clean-up renderings, and tonals), paintings and digital imagery.
  • Direct and lead the team responsible for producing these visual elements.
  • Follow production through delivery to uphold show styles and standards.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years as a Production Designer or Art Director on a feature animated experience required.
  • Have strong leadership skills, to motivate and lead a team.
  • Ability to solve problems and be resourceful and adaptable.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and monitor team progress across all areas of the project.
  • Must exhibit a proficiency in drawing, design, and digital media, as it pertains to feature film design.
  • Must be comfortable working in a variety of styles - from "cartoony" to highly realistic.
  • The ideal candidate will have confirmed experience with environment/location design; special effects design; and color/lighting.
  • A solid understanding of 2D to 3D translations in your design process is required.
  • Understand the work of other departments as layout and animation, and to know how the design of the movie affects their work.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $2,853.83/week to $4,423/week. This role qualifies for benefits pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors.
