About Ruggable:

Ruggable is a fast-growing Los Angeles-based e-commerce company currently disrupting the $5.0B rug market. Our patented 2-Piece Rug System has a removable top layer that can be washed in a home washing machine, offering a stylish and convenient solution for families, pet owners, and busy individuals. We are a small, entrepreneurial team with big ambitions. We have a strong brand, established traction, and a great team fueling our growth. This is an opportunity to participate in a rapidly growing e-commerce startup on its Core Product team.

Our Values:

  1. Be Appreciative – Treat each other, our space, and our community with the utmost respect. Listen to each other, hear our customers.
  2. Be Fierce – Uncover the best ways to do things, then make them even better. Dare to ask questions.
  3. Attitude is Everything – Join the no extra-stress express. Even when it’s hard, remember there is always a way, we will find it.
  4. One Team One Dream – We are in this together. Be transparent, be open, be supportive, be a champion for our customers.
  5. Embrace the Journey – Success is built from iteration. Be nimble, share drafts, welcome feedback.
  6. Take Ownership – No matter the initiative, champion and stay accountable for your time, your work, and your actions.

The Role:

The Product Development Engineer will be the technical subject-matter expert on the Core Product team. This role needs someone who can understand what’s required to build our company’s technical capabilities to enable us to take new products from late-stage prototypes through to commercialization. As “lead tinkerer”, you will get your hands dirty in both software and hardware to understand the systems/technology required to launch new rug concepts at scale. This may involve recommending new industrial equipment/machinery or modifying existing industrial equipment/machinery to meet specific needs. This role requires a detail-oriented, self-starter who can clearly articulate technical concepts and needs in a succinct way to a non-technical audience. You can expect to be interfacing heavily with our Technology and Operations teams as an advocate for the needs of the Core Product team.

Key Responsibilities (dependent on candidate interest / business need at time of hire):

  • Building rapid understanding of current state and future state technology required to deliver on our New Product roadmap
  • Proactively modifying, building, or recommending the purchase of equipment or machinery required to fill these gaps between current state and future state needs
  • Liaising on behalf of Product with Technology and Operations to get the right solutions in place, on-time and within budget
  • Understanding and communicating trade-offs of different options to various stakeholders, balancing Product wants with what is feasible

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 3+ years of technical experience with hardware/software in a manufacturing-based business, ideally with equipment closely related to our business (e.g. textile printers, digital cutters)
  • Ability to assess gaps in technology and proactively recommend potential solutions to fill them
  • Described by others as a “tinkerer” – you have a good sense of how to play around with machines, equipment, and software to get them working properly
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, ideally in engineering or a related field

Preferred, but not necessary:

  • Experience with CPG/Retail, especially with textiles, carpeting, or apparel
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, ideally in engineering or a related field
  • Advanced degree in engineering or a related field

Additional Details:

  • Location: Gardena, CA (~20 min from downtown Los Angeles)
  • Job Type: Full-time; will consider externship or secondment of ~6 months
  • Compensation: Competitive, based on experience
  • Timeline: Q4 2019

Location

Following Ruggable's rapid growth, we have expanded into three different office locations within about a mile of each other in the South Bay area.

An Insider's view of Ruggable

What’s the vibe like in the office?

There's a very "driven" feeling in the office. Everyone is trying to put out excellent work and keep pushing the product and the company forward. At the same time, everyone is gracious and big ego's are not common. There is an attitude of perpetual growth and learning at every level.

Allison

Graphic Design Manager

What projects are you most excited about?

I'm most excited about projects that we're undertaking to enhance our Customer Experience. Some of the most immediate projects are expanding the different channels we communicate with customers on including phone and chat. We're also looking into standing up more self-service customer friendly tools so customers always know their order status.

Benny

Customer Experience Director

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

Ruggable’s culture lends itself to entrepreneurial go-getters looking for rapid career growth. Team members are given a ton of autonomy and trusted to deliver value. Once you prove yourself, your scope and responsibilities grow quickly. I joined as an individual contributor, and one year later I’m leading a large team as Director of Core Product.

Therese

Director of Core Product

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

I find the best way to foster creativity is, ironically, to provide a healthy set of constraints and guiding principles. This creates a tremendous amount of focus and problem solving around the limitations in creative ways. It's like providing the outline of a coloring book and giving your team access to and ownership over all the colored pencils!
