The Product Owner is responsible for the planning, execution, and delivery of data projects within NBC Sports Next. They will provide active ownership of day-to-day tasks including but not limited to: facilitating internal/external stakeholder meetings, gathering product requirements, writing bugs/user stories, and maintaining an organized backlog.
The Product Owner is expected to collaborate on data-related projects with stakeholders across the business including Product, Sales, Finance, Activation, Support, Engineering and Data teams to ensure immediate needs as well as long-term priorities are met while staying aligned with NBC Sports Next's overall B2B business strategy.
Responsibilities

Be required to understand internal/external stakeholder data needs as well as business objectives and translate those into technical requirements
Prioritize and maintain a backlog of data-related items across multiple products/teams
Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to lead and manage through the agile development process
Create and develop documentation for new and existing product functionality within the portfolio
Act as a functional product SME, as well as a functionality/feature evangelist to build awareness and understanding
Proactively identify and work collaboratively to resolve product issues
Lead and participate in agile product ceremonies such as sprint planning and backlog grooming/prioritization
Provide regular written/verbal updates to leadership regarding status of data-related projects

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

Experience navigating/querying SQL databases
Ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas clearly and concisely with both internal and external stakeholders
Experience leading projects from ideation through completion
Demonstrated ability to analyze data and make informed decisions upon analysis
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment
Experience providing project status updates to management
Understanding of a product's life cycle, with a specific focus on the development and implementation phases
Ability to think and work autonomously

Desired Characteristics

Proven track record with a minimum of 1 year in agile product-related role, demonstrating successful end-to-end product delivery
Bachelor's degree in business, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
Strong background documenting bugs and writing user stories/requirements
Experience with collaboration/planning tools such as Confluence and JIRA
Experience leading and motivating teams
Experience/knowledge of point-of-sale technology/industry
Experience/knowledge of golf course operations
Experience working with cloud-based technology

In addition to building and optimizing internal applications, Director of Technical Architecture Trevor Roberts is working on NBCUniversal’s carbon reporting tool to help move the company’s sustainability goals forward. Targeting carbon neutrality across global operations by 2035, NBCU is prioritizing sustainability, and carbon reporting will help support the programs increasing efficiency and reducing waste everywhere from film productions to office buildings. “We can set a standard in the entertainment industry for sustainability that will benefit generations to come,” Roberts said.

Senior Director of Data Science Robert Davis and his team have been at the forefront of forecasting and optimization, machine learning, natural language processing and deep learning, all contributing to the research, design and development of all of the company’s AdSmart products. “The AdSmart team and NBCUniversal will evolve to embrace ongoing changes and technological advances,” he said. Currently, Davis’s team is focused on “a particularly exciting program” — generating accurate scripts and metadata from video with the long-term goal of extending those capabilities to live content.

New tech offers opportunities for individual growth

In 2016, Reshma Jain was hired as a QA specialist for the NBC Sports app, and it wasn’t long before her leadership skills were noticed by her manager. “Slowly, all the requests started coming to me,” Jain said. “During the Olympics, we had multiple critical requests coming in, and my manager asked me to lead the prioritization and communication on when they would be executed based on the severity of each request.” In 2019, Jain heard about a new NBCUniversal app, Peacock. “I wanted to be part of the product from the start,” she said. “I was ready to take the next step leading the QA team.”

I was chosen for the Influence Talent Lab program to develop the skills I need to effectively and concisely communicate ideas and engage with stakeholders at all levels.
