The Product Owner - BI is a critical function within the IT Department, bridging the gap between executive strategy and technical execution. This role is responsible for ensuring that Business Intelligence initiatives are directly aligned with the company’s Value Framework Objectives (VFOs). This individual will manage the lifecycle of automation and data projects—from initial requirements gathering to final delivery—ensuring high visibility for leadership and clear direction for development teams.

Roles:

  • Strategic Alignment: Partner with leadership to prioritize the project backlog based on VFOs, ROI, and organizational timelines.
  • Operational Execution: Act as the central hub for the BI team, managing work intake, developer assignments, and delivery schedules.
  • Requirements Advocacy: Translate complex business needs into detailed technical specifications that developers can execute with minimal ambiguity.
  • Business Insights Guidance: Work directly with the business to identify key performance drivers and recommend the best ways to visualize data for clear decision-making.

Major Responsibilities or Assigned Duties:

Leadership Reporting & Visibility:

  • Provide weekly status updates on VFO-aligned projects to applicable leadership and stakeholders.
  • Communicate project health, risks, and milestones to ensure transparency across the leadership team.

Agile Workflow Management:

  • Own the Kanban/Jira board, ensuring all tasks are accurately documented, assigned, and moving through the development lifecycle.
  • Maintain a clean and prioritized backlog, ensuring developers are always working on the highest-value tasks.

Scoping & Requirement Gathering:

  • Lead discovery sessions for new BI dashboards and workflows to define functional and technical requirements.
  • Document "as-is" and "to-be" processes to ensure automation projects deliver the intended efficiency gains.
  • Help the business to refine vague requests into specific data requirements, ensuring the final dashboards solve their operational problems.

Development Coordination:

  • Collaborate daily with BI developers to estimate build timelines and manage resource capacity.
  • Assist in managing off-shore development teams, providing clear tasking and ensuring accountability for assigned deliverables.

Strategic Prioritization:

  • Analyze incoming project requests against VFOs and current timelines to provide data-driven recommendations on prioritization and schedules.

Work Environment:

Ability to sit at a desk, utilize a computer, telephone, and other basic office equipment is required. This role is designed to be a remote position (work-from-home).

Diversity Statement:

Diversity creates a healthier atmosphere: All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
