Product Manager at Kilo CodeAbout Kilo Code

Founded in March 2025, Kilo Code is a remote-first startup building the fastest-growing AI coding agent. We're already generating over 6T tokens per month (top of the leaderboard) with over 500,000 installs. Our open-source, high-output team includes a 15-person engineering org with an average of 15 years of experience. Co-founded by Sid Sijbrandij (co-founder of GitLab and UBoatWorx) and Scott Breitenother (founder of Brooklyn Data Co), we're growing quickly to 35 people. We meet in-person for a focus week every quarter and expect high agency to deliver results in a fast dynamic environment.

Role Overview

As our first Product Manager, you'll set the strategy and vision for the core extension and workflows that most users interact with on a day-to-day basis. You’ll work very closely with our engineers to shape our AI tools for individual developers and development stakeholders (e.g., engineering managers). You'll represent the user, driving product strategy in a crowded market by focusing on competitive differentiation, user needs, and efficient MVPs. This senior role requires 6-10 years of product experience, deep technical fluency to collaborate with our seasoned engineers, and a startup mindset to thrive with broad agency.

Responsibilities
  1. Understand and represent our two key user personas: individual developers and enterprise stakeholders like engineering managers.

  2. Gather user feedback, analyze the current product experience (e.g., VS Code extension, CLI agent), and prioritize features based on impact.

  3. Develop long-term product vision, including future developments like cloud agents and AI code review tools.

  4. Monitor competitors, identify differentiation opportunities, and craft strategies to win in the devtools space.

  5. Collaborate with tech leads and engineers on technical feasibility, estimates, and architecture—ensuring fluent technical conversations.

  6. Own roadmaps and project prioritization, focusing on 80/20 solutions and MVPs to ship value quickly.

  7. Work cross-functionally with our engineering manager, tech lead, and customer teams to align on goals and handle interruptions.

  8. Drive high-output processes in our remote setup, contributing to a culture of agency and rapid iteration.

(This list is not exhaustive; as an early-stage company, you'll shape the role.)

Qualifications
  1. 6-10 years of product management experience, with proven ability to own end-to-end product strategy at startups.

  2. Deep technical expertise: Able to discuss software architecture, AI tools, and engineering trade-offs fluently with senior engineers. You were probably a former engineer.

  3. Strong user empathy and research skills; experience with developer tools or enterprise software is a plus.

  4. Instinct for prioritization: Focus on high-impact, minimal viable solutions in fast-paced environments.

  5. Exceptional communicator: Clear, concise, and effective communication and collaboration skills are essential in our remote-first, high-complexity environment.

  6. Broad skills and interests, with excellent judgment on what's critical vs. non-essential.

  7. Understanding of competitive landscapes and strategies to differentiate and win.

  8. Startup experience required; prior founder or devtools background is a plus.

  9. High aptitude, hard-working, and thrives with agency to get things done quickly.

  10. Comfortable in a remote-first, open-source company with occasional in-person weeks.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
