What does a Product Manager do, anyway? In plain terms, this usually means:
  • Help Set the Big Goals: Maintain the advisory roadmap, aligned with company strategy set with the senior leadership team.
  • Learn What Customers Want: Run discovery with borrowers, HR and benefits teams, and client stakeholders to understand what they need.  Lead the product side of new client implementations, working with the Account Manager

  • Keep an Eye on Competitors: Monitor competitors and the PSLF policy landscape for changes that affect the product
  • Manage the minutia:  Be engineering's day-to-day decision-maker on scope and edge cases so work isn't blocked
If this sounds like you, your previous education, work experience, and passions probably sound like this:
  • You’ve successfully launched features into production and have experience leading teams of various sizes.
  • You’re resourceful, achieving results even with limited resources.
  • Your communication skills are exceptional—you effectively engage with leadership, employees, and customers.
  • You’ve empowered your team by introducing frameworks that enhance their productivity and scalability.
  • You’re analytical and data-driven, always basing decisions on solid insights.
  • You have a deep empathy for users. Poorly designed products that confuse or frustrate users are something you’re determined to avoid.
  • You know how to scope projects and make thoughtful, objective trade-offs when determining which features to prioritize.
  • You’re comfortable saying "no" when necessary but also skilled at reassuring stakeholders—both internal and external—that while we may not be addressing their request today, we’re on the right path and will get there soon.
  • You’ve worked alongside a founder with a strong product mindset, building trust through data-backed decisions and effective relationship management.

Lastly, here’s what success looks like in this position:

  • You consistently set clear, actionable goals for the quarterly product roadmap.
  • You effectively prioritize features that drive customer satisfaction and revenue growth.
  • You ensure timely, bug-free feature releases.
  • You regularly track and evaluate OKRs and KPIs for the product, continuously iterating for improvement.
  • You lead weekly product design reviews with all key stakeholders to ensure alignment and prevent any side conversations or decisions outside of the main discussions.
  • You provide consistent, constructive feedback to both development and design teams.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
