About Us

Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic brings sports fans the most comprehensive stories about the teams, sports and athletes they love. The Athletic’s newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs.

About the Role

Product plays a pivotal role at The Athletic, spearheading critical cross-functional initiatives and leading teams of engineers, designers, marketers, analysts, and newsroom staff to execute seamlessly on behalf of the business and our users.

As a Product Manager, you will lend your domain and functional expertise to a wide range of Product and business areas. You will build compelling experiences that sports fans love, drive engagement growth down our subscription funnel, and improve our product platforms. You will tackle complex issues that require cross-functional strategic, operational, and technical alignment. This is an individual contributor role, and you will be critical to the success of the Product organization and The Athletic more broadly.

Domain Areas
We have Product disciplines across consumer / sports fan user experiences, engagement growth, commercialization, and platforms
Based on your skillset, interest, and business needs, you will begin in one of these areas, partnering closely with a Director of Product
Over time, you will get to work across main domains, driving impact across the product and business, and building multidisciplinary skills

Responsibilities

  • Strategy, Roadmap, and Impact:
  • Drive business impact, measured with specific metrics.
  • Inform the strategy for your product area to drive those metrics.
  • Identify initiatives that will help us achieve that strategy.
  • Manage a roadmap that drives impact now and in the future.
  • Understand the competitive environment and stay on top of great user experiences.

  • Leadership:
  • Be a visible leader in your communication and action-orientation.
  • Foster a highly collaborative cross-functional environment focused on shared metrics and objectives.
  • Contribute to or lead collaborative, productive cross-functional working group(s).

  • Execution:
  • Execute on your roadmap with a tech pod including Design, Engineering, Marketing, Editorial, and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the rest of the Product team to align initiatives and dependencies, so that we create a cohesive global product experience.
  • Understand technical considerations, and work collaboratively with engineering to balance level of effort and quality + scalability.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of highly relevant product management experience; experience at a fast-growing consumer company, especially within sports or media, is a plus.
  • High familiarity with and love for sports and journalism.
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills.
  • Action-orientation: you succeed in part because you take initiative and get things done.
  • Excitement about getting to work across product disciplines.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver projects.
  • Ability to empathize with users.
  • Comfort with data - analyzing data, deriving insights, and making data-driven decisions.
  • Eagerness to try new things and learn - and a willingness to fail.

The annual base salary range for this role is $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 USD. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
