About Span

Span exists to help engineering organizations turn AI adoption into real effectiveness. As AI tools reshape how software gets built, the companies that continuously improve how their teams use AI in their day-to-day will pull ahead. We're the AI-native developer intelligence platform built for that moment. We're looking for people who want to shape how the next generation of high-performing engineering orgs operate.

We're a Series A company with a small, focused team that moves fast and ships things that matter. We’re proud to be helping forward-thinking orgs like Ramp, Carvana, Intercom, and OpenTable. We're honored to be backed by dozens of founders, CTOs, and CPOs we admire from Slack, Notion, Rippling, Fivetran, Coda, Adobe, and Square, as well as funds including Alt Capital, BoxGroup, Bling, Craft, and SV Angel.

About the role

We're hiring a Senior Product Designer to join our team and help shape the future of Span's platform. You'll work across the full design stack to deliver outcomes, from early exploration to shipped product, and be a key voice in how we design for a technically sophisticated audience of engineering leaders and developers.

Design at Span punches well above our weight. With a team of three, we own the end-to-end product experience, the design system, and the visual language of the brand. Our goal every day is to find ways to improve Span tenfold (more on the team later). As a result, we want someone who forms strong opinions about what we should build, pushes back when the product direction or craft isn't there yet, leverages AI to increase their throughput, and brings a point of view that elevates the whole team.

What you'll do
  • Use AI throughout your process to give you leverage: prototype with V0, Figma Make, Cursor, or Claude to quickly shape your ideas and build confidence in a direction.

  • Own design for one or more product areas end-to-end, from discovery and framing through to polished, shipped UI

  • Work on complex data-dense interfaces where clarity, hierarchy, and interpretability are everything

  • Seek signal from customers in whatever way makes sense to develop a real understanding of the problems we’re solving

  • Collaborate daily with engineering, product, and GTM to shape what we build and its narrative, not just how it looks

  • Contribute to and evolve our design system, raising the floor of our experience and enabling the team to ship coherent experiences quickly

  • Contribute to our team culture, finding ways for us to get 1% better every day. It compounds!

What we're looking for
  • Thrill seekers: Early stage and 0-to-1 is not for everyone. Some people enjoy refining things that are already at scale, and some people love the bumpy journey of going from nothing to said scale. We’re very much in the latter camp. If you prefer ambiguity to well-defined scope, are comfortable with pivoting when new insights come in, like to wear multiple hats, and obsess over the business not just the product, you might be in this camp too!

  • Experience: We’re a small team and move quickly, so we’re looking for someone who can match the pace and learn as they go. This does not mean you won’t receive mentorship or learning opportunities, it just means that there’ll be a level of autonomy expected. At least for this stage of our team. This likely means… 4+ years of experience as a product designer, ideally in B2B SaaS or a developer tools company. It also means that you’ve owned projects end-to-end and have a portfolio highlighting your impact.

  • Craft: We’re big believers that UX is only one portion of our job. How that UX is translated into what the customer sees and interacts with is of equal importance. We’re looking for strong visual judgement and someone who holds themselves accountable to what shipped, not what was made in Figma.

  • Collaborative: Even in this AI era, product development remains a team sport. We’re looking for someone who balances confidence with humility, who seeks out the perspective and input of their xfn counterparts, who listens more than they speak, and who communicates clearly when speaking is called for.

  • AI fluency: We’re building AI intelligence software! We’re also a design team of 3. We practice what we preach! We’re looking for someone who pushes the limits of AI tooling to extract as much leverage as they can. You treat AI as a multiplier, not a shortcut.

About Span Design

You'll be joining a design team of three (spanning brand and product design) that punches well above its size. We're close-knit and genuinely collaborative: we're in each other's work every day, sharing feedback early and often, and building something together rather than working in silos.

Collectively, we've shipped products at companies like Lattice, Shopify, and Vanta. We've worked across early, mid, and late-stage companies, which means we know how to build structure where there isn't any and how to operate with the scrappiness that a Series A demands.

Our north star as a team: craft an end-to-end experience that makes Span feel 10x bigger than we actually are. That ambition runs through two operating tenets we hold ourselves to every day:

  • Design ahead of the business: We think at least a quarter ahead of the roadmap, finding innovation opportunities before the product needs them. We don't wait to be handed a brief; we bring a point of view.

  • Create team leverage: We invest in the tools, systems, and partnerships that make the whole team move faster. That means a living design system, tight eng collaboration, and using AI tooling to extend what three people can do.

In practice, this means you'll have real ownership, real influence, and real accountability. We don't have enough people to carry someone, but we also don't have enough people to slow someone down. If this excites you, we’d love to chat! Let’s make some waves together at Span!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
