The Product Designer will lead the design of new features for video editing, collaborating with various stakeholders while ensuring high-quality user experiences and clear communication throughout the design process.
The summary above was generated by AI

As a Product Designer, you’ll help leverage emerging technology to reimagine the experience of editing video. You’ll own the end-to-end design of new features and evolution of existing ones in the generative/agentic space.

You’ve got a passion for creating novel experiences and experience collaborating closely with user research, product management, engineering, and other designers to achieve the right mix of novelty and usefulness.

Our product is an intricate web of interconnected features, which means designers at Descript need strong systems design thinking. You’ll need to know how to find the right fit for new features in an existing product and have a strong intuition for when to push at system boundaries.

Join us to help build the future of creative tools.

  • Advocate for what you think is right, know when to disagree and commit
Requirements

  • Exceptional interaction and visual design skills—the ability to create delight without sacrificing usability
  • Understanding of AI/ML and some experience designing for it
  • Experience designing web, mobile or desktop applications with workflows and systems design challenges
  • Experience on a fast-growing team and ability to work through ambiguity and create clarity
  • Clear, direct communication
  • Self-direction, you own your own work and deliver on your commitments
  • Contribute actively in team crit—know how to give and receive feedback well
  • At least 2 of the following stand-out skills
Stand-out skills

  • Experience building or working on a mature design system
  • Expertise in accessibility

  • An interest in Vibe coding (or, hey, code coding) for prototyping
  • Finding new tools and processes (including AI) to improve the design process
  • UI animation skills

The base salary range for this role is $190,000-$230,000/ year. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, location, and may vary from the amount above.

About Descript

Descript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio — an editing tool built for the age of AI. We are a team of 150 — with a proven CEO and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital).

Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.

Benefits include a generous healthcare package, catered lunches, and flexible vacation time. Our headquarters are located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. We're looking to hire people who are local and able to join us at the office when needed. We're flexible, and you're an adult—we don't expect or mandate that you're in the office every day. But we do believe there are valuable and serendipitous moments of discovery and collaboration that come from working together in person.

Descript is an equal opportunity workplace—we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We believe in actively building a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions to better allow our employees, products, and community to thrive.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
