Lead design for AI product surfaces, creating user flows and prototypes while collaborating closely with teams and conducting usability testing.
The summary above was generated by AI
About the Role

A1 is building a proactive AI chat app for everyday users to bring intelligence to conversations, errands, organising and workflows. Unlike traditional chat-based applications, our product focuses on achieving high reliability for long-running workflows, persistent context, and real-world task completion. The system must handle multi-step reasoning, interact with external tools, and remain reliable despite non-deterministic model behavior.

You will shape how users experience AI from the ground up. This is an early, high-ownership role where your design decisions will directly influence core user flows, interaction models, and product direction.

You will design systems and journeys – how users discover value, interact with intelligence, and build trust in an AI-driven product.

What You'll be Doing
  • Lead end-to-end design for one or more AI product surfaces, from early concept to production.

  • Design core user flows that make advanced AI capabilities feel simple, natural, and usable.

  • Work closely with product, engineering, and ML teams to explore problems, test ideas, and ship quickly.

  • Create wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI for web and mobile.

  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on new interaction models, especially for AI-driven experiences.

  • Conduct usability testing and synthesize insights to refine product direction.

  • Help define and evolve A1’s design system to support speed, consistency, and scalability.

  • Advocate for user experience while balancing product velocity and technical constraints.

What You Will Need
  • Proven experience as a product or UX designer, with a portfolio spanning web and mobile products.

  • Strong proficiency in Figma and rapid prototyping tools.

  • Solid understanding of interaction design, layout, hierarchy, and visual systems.

  • Experience working closely with engineers and product partners in fast-moving environments.

  • Comfort designing from incomplete inputs and evolving requirements.

  • Ability to simplify complex workflows into clear, intuitive user experiences.

  • Willingness to take ownership from problem definition through shipped solution.

Nice to have
  • Experience designing AI-powered or data-heavy products.

  • Familiarity with usability testing and qualitative research methods.

  • Experience working on zero-to-one products or early-stage teams.

  • Interest in emerging UX patterns for AI, automation, or intelligent systems.

Outcomes
  • Own the end-to-end AI interaction experience, from first discovery to repeated use.

  • Ensure AI behaviors are predictable, intuitive, and trusted by users.

  • Take responsibility for the clarity, usability, and effectiveness of complex workflows.

  • Detect friction or confusion proactively and design solutions that prevent issues before they reach users.

  • Own the translation of research and engineering capabilities into coherent, usable product experiences.

  • Define and track success metrics for AI UX, and iterate designs based on real user behavior.

  • Mentor and influence other designers and cross-functional teams on AI interaction standards.

  • Make high-impact design decisions that balance speed, technical feasibility, and long-term system quality.

  • Drive a design philosophy that becomes a foundation for all future AI product surfaces.

How We Work

The best products today in the world were built by small, world class teams. We are a high talent density and hands-on team. We make decisions collectively, move at rapid speed, striking a balance between shipping high quality work and learning. Joining our team requires the ability to bring structure, exercise judgment, and execute independently. Our goal is to put in hands of our users a truly magical product

Interview process

If there appears to be a fit, we'll reach to schedule 3, but no more than 4 interviews.

Applications are evaluated by our technical team members. Interviews will be conducted via virtual meetings and/or onsite.

We value transparency and efficiency, so expect a prompt decision. If you've demonstrated the exceptional skills and mindset we're looking for, we'll extend an offer to join us. This isn't just a job offer; it's an invitation to be part of a team that's bringing AI to have practical benefits to billions globally.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
