Dave is focused on serving Americans who are financially vulnerable or living paycheck to paycheck. Dave is leading the charge in creating a new era of credit products that prioritizes speed, affordability, and accessibility, making it the go-to financial partner for those who need it most.

Dave is looking for an experienced product and regulatory attorney to help shape the next generation of financial products for our members. You'll bring deep expertise in consumer financial services, banking, and payments to help Dave innovate responsibly while navigating an evolving regulatory landscape.

The Opportunity

As Director, Product & Regulatory Legal, you'll be a trusted legal advisor to teams across Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations. You'll help shape product strategy, guide complex regulatory decisions, and build practical legal frameworks that support innovation and responsible growth.

This is a senior individual contributor role with meaningful autonomy and visibility. You'll influence decisions across Dave's banking, lending, payments, and subscription products while balancing legal risk, business objectives, and member experience.

What You'll Build & Own
  • Shape product strategy: Partner with cross-functional teams to advise on new product launches, payment capabilities, banking services, and enhancements to existing products.

  • Guide regulatory decisions: Provide strategic counsel on consumer financial regulations, state licensing, payments, bank partnerships, and emerging regulatory requirements.

  • Support strategic partnerships: Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements with financial institutions, payment processors, fintech partners, and technology providers.

  • Own complex legal matters: Serve as a subject matter expert on BaaS, NACHA rules, payment networks, BSA/AML, fraud, privacy, and consumer servicing matters.

  • Anticipate what's next: Monitor regulatory developments, evaluate emerging financial technologies, and translate evolving requirements into practical business recommendations.

  • Improve how Legal operates: Build scalable processes, strengthen regulatory monitoring, and thoughtfully leverage technology, AI, and outside counsel to improve efficiency and impact.

The Impact

Your work will directly influence how Dave develops and delivers accessible financial products. You'll help teams make informed decisions that protect our members, strengthen partnerships, and support sustainable growth.

What We're Looking For
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with a state bar.

  • 7–10 years of relevant legal experience in consumer financial services, fintech, banking, or a related regulatory practice.

  • Deep expertise in consumer banking and payments regulations, including Regulation E, NACHA rules, card network requirements, BSA/AML, and state money transmission laws.

  • Strong working knowledge of applicable federal consumer financial regulations, including FCRA/FACTA, SCRA/MLA, FDCPA, FDIC insurance requirements, and GLBA/Regulation P.

  • Experience advising on state licensing requirements, regulatory change management, and banking or lending operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex legal issues, negotiate commercial agreements, and provide actionable, business-oriented counsel.

Bonus Points

  • Experience advising a neobank, banking-as-a-service platform, or consumer-facing fintech.

  • Familiarity with digital assets, emerging payment technologies, or financial services regulatory advocacy.

  • Experience improving legal workflows through automation or AI.

What Makes Someone Successful Here

You bring sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and a practical approach to solving complex problems. You connect legal considerations to product strategy, operational realities, and member impact, helping teams make thoughtful decisions even when the path isn't fully defined.

You're a collaborative partner who builds trust across functions, communicates complex issues clearly, and welcomes different perspectives. You take ownership of outcomes while recognizing that the strongest solutions come from shared expertise.

What to Expect

You'll operate with significant independence and work closely with leaders across Dave. Priorities will evolve as products, regulations, and business needs change. You'll have the opportunity to influence direction early, build durable solutions, and help teams navigate ambiguity with confidence.

Why Join Dave?

At Dave, we believe everyone deserves access to their own money without predatory fees. You'll have the opportunity to shape products that serve millions of members, influence meaningful business decisions, and work alongside people who value thoughtful execution, collaboration, and lasting impact.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
