Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
Role
We are looking for a Principle ML engineer to join the Teamwork Graph team and a group of talented engineers who are responsible for helping build and deploy the knowledge graph of how teams work together. The graph is the foundational data layer Teamwork Graph logically representing all of a customer's data, with edges/relationships to connect entities across feature and product boundaries. The Graph powers various new AI products such as Rovo, as well as enables Atlassian products to work better together. Checkout this clip from the recent founder keynote for more details. You will work closely with the team to execute the strategy for advanced graph querying and powering a suite of Graph + AI powered applications and experiences. You will also collaborate with the federated product teams and other central orgs to integrate the Teamwork knowledge deeply in various products such as Search, Jira, Confluence, and many upcoming ones.
Responsibilities:
  • Process and structure large amounts of graph data to power applications across Atlassian
  • Build great APIs
  • Creative use of generative AI and ML to process, structure, and reason over large amounts of data to power intelligent products
  • Mentor and coach your team members on best practices, code quality, design patterns, testing, debugging, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external partners, present technical concepts and results clearly and concisely, and solicit feedback and input from various stakeholders.

Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience building and scaling business applications and systems using large amounts of data
  • Built generalizable platforms with a keen eye on empowering applications in product
  • Agile development mindset, appreciating the benefit of iteration and improvement
  • Experience working with LLMs and RAG a bonus

Compensation
At Atlassian, we strive to design equitable, explainable, and competitive compensation programs. To support this goal, the baseline of our range is higher than that of the typical market range, but in turn we expect to hire most candidates near this baseline. Base pay within the range is ultimately determined by a candidate's skills, expertise, or experience. In the United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:
Zone A: $232,200 - $303,150
Zone B: $209,700 - $273,775

This role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
