As a Principal UX Writer at Riot Games, you'll shape player communication and experience in Riftbound by creating clear, engaging content and collaborating with design teams to ensure usability and coherence in game mechanics and storytelling.
The summary above was generated by AI

As a UX Writer, you’ll shape the player experience across one of our games - from text and tutorials to UI and packaging. Your job isn’t to balance mechanics; it’s to design understanding. You’ll collaborate with designers, producers, and narrative partners to make sure every piece of text feels intuitive, purposeful, and alive in the world of League of Legends. At a high level, this role blends strategic systems thinking and hands-on craft. You’ll define content standards, build editorial systems, and influence game design decisions through clarity, usability, and tone

As a Principal UX Writer on Riftbound, you'll help the team scale processes, strengthen voice, and build sustainable ways to keep Riftbound’s world coherent as it grows. You’ll apply UX writing and content design principles to a unique medium - helping transform deep game mechanics into accessible, engaging player experiences. Your work will set the tone and shape how Riftbound communicates, feels, and teaches. This is a hands-on, self-directed role. You’ll manage your own writing pipeline, estimate timelines, track revisions, and coordinate with producers to stay aligned with the release schedule. You won’t manage people, but you’ll manage the process: ensuring nothing slips through cracks and every line meets the clarity and quality standards players deserve. You will report directly to the Game Director.

Responsibilities:
  • Write and edit player-facing text, including card names, abilities, tutorials, and in-game UI
  • Collaborate closely with designers to make sure text supports gameplay intent and is easy for players to grasp. You’ll balance clarity and flavor, ensuring every line is both easy to understand and rich with worldbuilding.
  • Define standards and voice - building and maintaining Riftbound’s editorial systems: terminology rules, templates, and voice guidelines , while creating framework that will help everyone, from designers to localization partners, speaking in one consistent, accessible tone
  • Partner with designers to simplify mechanics or adjust copy when complexity risks confusing the player.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and work closely with design, production, and localization partners to bring language into the development process early.
  • Join playtests, review flows, and offer language insights that make the product more intuitive
  • Build scalable content systems establishing processes for reviewing, documenting, and evolving game text so Riftbound’s world remains clear, cohesive, and future-proof.
  • Manage the content pipeline - helping to scope writing work, align with production on timelines, and prioritize milestones.
  • Brief, edit, and integrate their work to maintain tone and clarity from external writers
  • Flex as cards evolve or new features appear and find smart, concise language solutions under deadlines without losing quality.
  • Model UX writing best practices, collaborate closely with design partners, and advocate for clear, player-first communication across the Riftbound team, helping the team think about writing as design, not decoration.
Required Qualifications:
  • 6–10+ years of professional experience in UX writing or editorial roles—ideally with exposure to systems-based content such as games, apps, or other interactive products.
  • Experience owning end-to-end content pipelines - from guidelines to launch.
  • Experience designing content systems.
  • Experience working on TCGs or equivalent genres of game development.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to translate complexity into simplicity without losing flavor.
  • Deep experience working cross-functionally with design, production, and art partners.
  • Ability to explain content decisions clearly and give or receive feedback with empathy.
  • Experience with interactive systems.
  • Familiarity with League of Legends

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise and a collaborative spirit that prioritizes the delight of players. We will look at your past studies and experience, but for this role, we also look for dedicated people with a personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about players' experiences, this is the role for you!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
