General Summary:As part of the Validation Services team at Unum, this role will lead innovation in enterprise-wide testing strategies, architect GenAI-based testing solutions, and advance both automation frameworks and testing maturity using TMMi standards. The Principal Software Test Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring Unum’s platforms meet high standards for speed, quality, and resilience.
This position is available in the following locations: Atlanta, GA; Chattanooga, TN; Portland, ME.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science required; Master’s preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of total software engineering and testing experience, with significant leadership responsibility.
  • Experience with implementing GenAI solutions to testing
  • Expertise to both Functional and non-functional test automation frameworks
  • Expertise in TMMi or similar testing maturity frameworks
  • Enterprise testing practices across diverse technology stacks
  • Proficiency in modern test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, JMeter).
  • Strong understanding of integrating testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Outstanding collaboration and influence skills, with the ability to drive adoption across diverse teams.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Passionate about creating innovative, customer-focused solutions.
  • Expert in Agile methodologies, test automation, TDD, CI/CD, and DevOps practices.
  • High attention to detail and strong quality orientation.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • GenAI Testing Innovation: Research, evaluate, and implement AI/ML-driven tools for test case generation, validation, and optimization.
  • Enterprise Test Automation Leadership: Architect and scale automation frameworks for functional, performance, and security testing.
  • TMMi Maturity Advancement: Lead the adoption and continuous improvement of the TMMi assessment process.
  • Quality Engineering Practices: Define and evangelize enterprise-wide testing strategies, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and DevOps teams to embed quality throughout the delivery pipeline.
  • Understands business needs and designs scalable, secure, and customer-centric solutions to enable desired capabilities.
  • Provides technical leadership and direction within a Business Delivery Hub (BDH) or value stream.
  • Collaborates with architects to define and apply technical roadmaps, standards, tooling, and frameworks to support a modern, high-quality application suite.
  • Leads the identification and adoption of innovative IT solutions, including third-party and cloud platforms, to improve business capabilities.
  • Drives application architecture design and ensures alignment with reference architecture and strategic roadmaps.
  • Champions the use of modern technologies such as AI, digital platforms, and automation to solve business problems.
  • Prioritizes buy-over-build strategies and cloud-based solutions where feasible.
  • Continuously monitors industry trends and upcoming functionality in cloud/third-party solutions to expand business applicability.
  • Guides solution selection, risk assessment, and technology sunsetting to align with architectural sustainability and business goals.
  • Ensures application solutions deliver excellent customer experience, comply with open standards, and meet performance, security, and scalability criteria.
  • Owns the full software development lifecycle – from design and implementation to deployment and ongoing support.
  • Collaborates with agile teams, product owners, UX designers, and business architects to ensure clear requirements, high-value delivery, and customer-focused outcomes.
  • Participates in backlog grooming, story prioritization, and defines "definition of done" for delivery stages.
  • Resolves architectural uncertainties through architectural sprints and updates roadmaps and backlogs based on findings.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of Unum's implementation of third-party/cloud solutions and assesses impacts of new product releases.
  • May participate in hands-on design, coding, testing, configuration, and maintenance using agreed-upon tools and standards.
  • Provides mentorship and promotes best practices in software engineering including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, and agile methodologies.
  • Encourages innovation and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Monitors application behavior in production, ensuring performance and stability meet business needs.
  • Keeps ALM tools current and communicates progress and blockers during daily stand-ups.
  • Ensures transparency with stakeholders and engages senior leadership as needed.
  • May serve as Scrum Master for an agile team.

    The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

    $109,100.00-$224,000.00

    Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
