The Principal Software Engineer provides technical leadership across Thorne's technology organization by defining architectural strategy, driving engineering excellence, and delivering scalable software solutions that support the company's long-term business objectives. This role partners closely with business and technology leaders to align technical investments with strategic priorities while establishing modern engineering practices that promote innovation, reliability, and operational efficiency.

As a hands-on technical leader, the Principal Software Engineer is responsible for the architecture, design, and development of strategic technology platforms and enterprise applications. This individual leads the delivery of complex technical initiatives, mentors engineering teams, and drives the adoption of scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that accelerate Thorne's digital transformation and future growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partner with business and technology leaders to define and execute Thorne's long-term technology strategy, ensuring technical investments align with business objectives and future growth.
  • Establish enterprise architecture standards, engineering best practices, and technical roadmaps that promote scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability across software platforms.
  • Design, develop, deploy, and optimize high-performance, fault-tolerant applications, APIs, and integrations supporting both internal systems and customer-facing digital experiences.
  • Lead the architecture and delivery of complex, cross-functional technology initiatives, providing technical direction from solution design through implementation and ongoing operational support.
  • Drive modernization initiatives by evaluating emerging technologies, identifying opportunities for innovation, and recommending solutions that improve business capabilities and operational efficiency.
  • Champion software quality by promoting engineering excellence, secure development practices, automated testing, observability, performance optimization, and operational resilience.
  • Partner with Product, Infrastructure, Security, Data, and business teams to develop scalable technical solutions that balance customer experience, business priorities, and long-term platform sustainability.
  • Establish technical standards for system performance, reliability, security, and customer experience while defining metrics to measure success and drive continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to executive leadership, effectively communicating architectural decisions, technology strategies, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Mentor and coach engineers across the organization by providing technical guidance, conducting architecture and code reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.
  • Support the growth of Thorne's engineering organization by participating in technical interviewing, recruiting, and the development of senior engineering talent.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, software engineering practices, cloud platforms, AI capabilities, and industry trends, recommending strategic investments that strengthen Thorne's technology ecosystem.

WHAT YOU NEED
Education & Experience  
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline preferred; Bachelor's degree with equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and delivering enterprise software solutions using modern statically typed programming languages such as Java, Scala, Go, or C#.
  • Proven experience defining software architecture and leading the delivery of complex, enterprise-scale technology initiatives.
  • Experience collaborating with executive leadership, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align technology strategy with business objectives.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving technical excellence across engineering organizations.
Technical Knowledge 
  • Deep expertise in software architecture, distributed systems, microservices, cloud-native application development, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Strong proficiency with modern software development technologies, including Java, Salesforce, MuleSoft, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and cloud computing platforms.
  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, concurrency, networking, and software design patterns.
  • Experience designing highly available, scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant systems supporting mission-critical business operations.
  • Experience with modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps, observability, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Working knowledge of secure software development practices and application security principles.
