We believe in the power and joy of learning

At Cengage, our employees have a direct impact in helping learners around the world discover the power and joy of learning. We are bonded by our shared purpose – driving innovation that helps millions of learners improve their lives and achieve their dreams through education.

AI product teams operate with clarity, efficiency, and cohesion. Processes are streamlined, duplication is eliminated, and every Product Manager has the space and support to focus deeply on their market and problem. Engineering implements with visibility and alignment, inspiring confidence across the organization. Research, legal, IP, GTM, and leadership are connected through well-orchestrated rhythms. The result: an AI portfolio that is cohesive, defensible, and delivers lasting value to customers and the business.

The Principal Product Operations Manager is the operational architect and connective force within the AI product organization. This role ensures that AI product teams move in sync with each other and the broader organization while maintaining focus on their strategic priorities. Acting as a cross-functional integrator, this position spans product, engineering, GTM, legal, PR, and intellectual property — building the frameworks and processes that enable scale and stability. The Principal Product Operations Manager also serves as a trusted advisor and problem-solver, stepping in to resolve operational challenges and drive alignment across teams.

What you'll do here
  • Operating Model Ownership – Develop and maintain processes, cadences, and frameworks that keep AI teams aligned, efficient, and conflict-free.
  • Case Development – Write and lead investment cases that frame opportunities, clarify value, and unlock resources.
  • Research & Insights Coordination – Orchestrate customer, market, and technical research so insights are shared across teams and translated into action.
  • Risk & Compliance Partnership – Work with legal and governance to anticipate and clear risks, enabling teams to innovate safely.
  • Patent & IP Stewardship – Build and coordinate the patent portfolio and broader IP position, ensuring defensibility and long-term leverage for AI products.
  • Mentorship Without Authority – Coach PMs across all teams, sharpening their craft and lifting their ability to deliver impact without requiring reporting lines.
  • Portfolio Cohesion & Focus – Ensure the AI product ecosystem is connected and employed under a cohesive vision, while protecting each team’s ability to focus on its specific market and problem.
  • Engineering Partnership – Provide engineering with clarity and visibility, helping them be efficient and amplifying their work as inspiration across the org.
  • Market & Communications Alignment – Support PMs in partnering with sales and GTM teams, while also working with PR and communications to ensure external narratives, customer messaging, and product positioning are consistent, trusted, and impactful.
  • Leadership Flex & Troubleshooting – Act as a “safety valve” for the org, able to step into leadership gaps, stabilize trouble spots, or carry critical initiatives when extra capacity is needed.
  • Evangelism & Storytelling – Carry and amplify the narrative of what the org is building — inside to encourage alignment, and outside to inspire trust, momentum, and thought leadership.
Skills you'll need here

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
