A Day in the LifeThe Principal Electrical Engineer will lead the design and development of advanced medical devices for diabetes patients, focusing on analog and digital circuit design, microcontroller system architecture, and lithium-ion battery power management—including wireless charging and Qi protocol. This role requires expertise in PCB design, power consumption analysis, and integration of RF/BLE communication technologies. Strong leadership, technical acumen, and multidisciplinary teamwork are essential for success in this position.
About the Role:
As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will play a key leadership role in the design and development of cutting-edge medical devices for people with diabetes. You will leverage your deep expertise in analog and digital circuit design, microcontroller system architecture, and advanced power management to help bring innovative solutions to market. This position requires a hands-on engineer who is passionate about quality, patient safety, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve complex technical challenges.
This position is an exciting opportunity to work with Medtronic's Diabetes business. Medtronic has announced its intention to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation within the business and reallocate investments and resources across Medtronic, subject to applicable information and consultation requirements. This separation provides our team with a bold opportunity to unleash our potential, enabling us to operate with greater speed and agility. As a separate entity, we anticipate leveraging increased investments to drive meaningful innovation and enhance our impact on patient care.
This is a hybrid position which requires 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and optimize lithium-ion battery power management circuits, including PMICs, fuel gauges, protection techniques, and wireless charging circuits compliant with Qi protocol.
- Conduct power and energy consumption analysis to ensure efficient device operation and maximize battery life.
- Drive PCB design and schematic capture, working closely with PCB layout engineers to ensure best practices for manufacturability, signal integrity, and EMI/EMC compliance.
- Lead the design, development, and verification of analog and digital circuits for medical device applications, focusing on reliability and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Design microcontroller-based systems and sub-systems, selecting appropriate components and ensuring robust system integration.
- Integrate and troubleshoot voltage regulators, RF and BLE communication modules, and advanced lithium-ion battery technologies.
- Collaborate proactively with systems, embedded software, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical designs within the overall device architecture.
- Participate in risk analysis, design reviews, and root cause analysis for electrical issues.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and review their designs for quality and compliance.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably in the medical device or regulated industry OR Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR PhD with 3 years relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Analog circuit design and simulation
- Microcontroller system architecture
- Lithium-ion battery design techniques including PMICs, fuel gauges, and protection circuits.
- Wireless charging and Qi protocol
- Power and energy consumption analysis
- PCBA schematic capture, layout, fabrication and assembly
- Experience with lithium-ion cell development with external vendors including design requirements, specification, prototyping, test, characterization, qualification and production.
- Experience with voltage regulators, RF and BLE communication, and digital circuit design.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams including systems, embedded software, and mechanical engineering.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and leadership skills.
- Experience with FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 60601, or other relevant medical device standards.
- Experience with low-power design and miniaturized electronics.
- Familiarity with IPC-610 and design for manufacturability and test (DFM/DFT).
- Experience with simulation and modeling tools (e.g., SPICE, Altium Designer, OrCAD).
