A Little About Us:

As part of Yahoo’s Experimentation team, you’ll play a critical role in enabling other teams across the company to test ideas, validate assumptions, and optimize user experiences at scale. We build and maintain a centralized experimentation platform that empowers Yahoo’s properties to run controlled experiments with scientific rigor and operational ease. This large-scale initiative offers you the opportunity to tackle complex technical challenges and make a significant impact on Yahoo’s product innovation cycle

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in engineering roles, particularly in large organizations, with a strong ability to handle complex data challenges. They should be passionate about leveraging data to drive business outcomes and possess excellent collaboration skills to work effectively across teams.


Responsibilities
  • Platform Architecture: Define and evolve the API platform architecture for Yahoo’s user data ecosystem, ensuring it meets business and engineering needs for scalability, security, and extensibility.

  • API Strategy & Design: Lead the definition of public and internal API contracts, including authentication, versioning, observability, and governance standards.

  • System Integration: Architect API gateways and service meshes to unify access to distributed systems while maintaining high performance and reliability.

  • Developer Experience: Champion intuitive, well-documented APIs that make it easy for internal and external developers to build powerful integrations.

  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner across product, infra, and security teams to deliver end-to-end solutions, from data ingestion to API exposure and client SDKs.

  • Technical Governance: Establish enterprise-wide best practices for API design, backward compatibility, rate limiting, and monitoring.

  • Innovation Leadership: Pioneer next-gen API patterns (e.g., GraphQL federation, OpenAPI-first development) that drive platform efficiency and developer agility.

  • Performance & Scalability: Build frameworks and standards to ensure API endpoints scale reliably with billions of transactions per day.

  • Mentorship: Mentor senior engineers and tech leads on API design principles, security, and performance.

  • Executive Communication: Represent API platform considerations in strategic forums and influence executive direction with technical depth.

Requirements
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on designing and developing scalable APIs and distributed backend systems.

  • 3+ years of experience leading platform or API architecture in cloud environments (GCP, AWS, or equivalent).

  • Expertise with REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and API versioning, authentication (OAuth2, JWT), and documentation (OpenAPI/Swagger).

  • Deep understanding of service meshes, API gateways, and microservice communication patterns.

  • Experience with API monitoring, logging, throttling, and traffic shaping at scale.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Go, Python, Scala).

  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Familiarity with developer portal tooling, API lifecycle management, and governance.

  • Strong SQL and data modeling fundamentals for integrating APIs with large datasets.

  • Demonstrated success in leading large-scale technical initiatives across multiple teams.

  • Prior experience with data-driven platforms, personalization, or audience segmentation is a plus.

The compensation for this position ranges from $143,625.00 - $299,375.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience.The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
