Matrix is seeking a Port and Terminal National Market Lead to drive business development and project execution across North America. If you’re a senior business development leader ready to own a market, hire your team, add new services, and shape strategy (including M&A scouting) then this role gives you the seat, the authority, and the capital support to do it. You’ll lead growth across an integrated service portfolio that includes environmental engineering; structural, geotechnical, and coastal engineering; regulatory permitting; asset management; port decarbonization; planning; dredging; and related marine services.
What You'll Do
- Leadership
- · Partner with the Marine & Coastal Practice Lead and Regional Development Lead on strategic planning, annual business plans, and market-wide initiatives.
- · Participate in leadership meetings, shaping decisions on staffing, expansion, and operational priorities.
- · Influence hiring decisions across development and technical teams to ensure alignment with growth goals.
- Market Building
- · Own the ports & terminals go-to-market strategy: segmentation, pursuit selection, offer design, pricing, and win plans.
- · Build a national pipeline with port authorities, terminal operators, stevedores, bulk cargo owners, energy majors, and marine contractors; convert anchor accounts into multi-year programs.
- · Target high-priority agencies and operators (e.g., PANYNJ, APMT, Ports America, Enstructure, etc.) aligning pursuits to funding and capital plans.
- · Recommend and support development of new service lines (e.g., port decarbonization, marine MEP, and port planning) that meet current and future market/client needs.
- · Develop strategy for relevant industry events and plan attendance, messaging, and targets to maximize return.
- Thought Leadership & Solutions
- · Partner with our private equity partner to source, evaluate, and recommend acquisitions that accelerate regional presence, specialty capabilities, or client access; lead commercial due diligence on targets and post-close integration plans.
- · Shape offerings to distinguish our services and capabilities from competitors.
- · Develop cross-platform strategies with other True Companies across Clients and Markets.
- · Sponsor capture for complex delivery models (e.g., design-build/alternative delivery) and multi-disciplinary teaming.
- Execution & Governance
- · Drive CRM best practices, forecast accuracy, and stage-gate discipline; lead reviews and develop business plans.
- · Hire and develop client account managers.
- · Monitor and drive pre-pursuit planning.
- · Lead proposal development with Matrix and True marketing team support.
- Lead project delivery as Project Director or Project Manager, as required

Minimum Qualifications
- 12–20+ years in the AEC sector with ports/terminals BD leadership and a proven record of winning and delivering large multi-disciplinary programs.
- Deep relationships with port authorities, terminal operators, bulk cargo/energy, marine contractors, and consultant ecosystems in priority regions (Tri-State, Mid-Atlantic, Gulf, West Coast).
- Fluency in integrated services across structural, geotechnical, coastal, permitting, dredging, planning, and asset management; familiarity with hydrographic/geomatics workflows a plus.
- Working knowledge of port decarbonization market (shore power, alternative fuels, hybrid systems) and terminal operations.
- Bachelor’s in engineering or related field
- This role will require the successful completion of fit for work testing which includes Drug & Alcohol testing
Preferred Qualifications
- P.E. helpful, but not required.
- Advanced degree (MBA/MS) or board certifications a plus.
- Comfort with alternative delivery and complex teaming structures; strong capture, proposal leadership, and price-to-win acumen.
- Executive presence, high EQ, and a builder’s mindset; able to recruit, coach, and scale high-performing teams.
