ABOUT UNTO LABS

Unto Labs is a team of engineers pushing distributed systems to their physical limits, building the next generation of blockchain technology on commodity hardware. We focus on core system primitives and performance-optimized architectures that drive the future of digital assets and markets.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're looking for a Platform/DevOps Engineer to own the infrastructure our engineering team builds on. CI/CD pipelines, deployment environments, observability, and developer tooling. Our infrastructure is fast-evolving, supporting distributed node architectures across multiple cloud providers, self-managed CI runners, and diverse deployment targets. You'll make our systems reliable, performant, and cost-effective.

This is a high-impact role on a small, high-caliber team. Your work will ensure that every other engineer moves fast and breaks few things. Expect to work directly with systems engineers and product to build and harden the platform layer for next-generation blockchain systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own and optimize our CI/CD pipelines ensuring reliability, cost efficiency, and effective spin-down to control compute costs

  • Consolidate and streamline deployment infrastructure across Cloudflare, Google Cloud Run, and legacy providers, reducing redundancy and fragility

  • Implement and maintain observability: structured logging (OpenTelemetry/HyperDX), alerting (PagerDuty/Slack), dashboards tracking node health, transaction flow, and network performance

  • Reduce developer onboarding friction: create reproducible local dev setups, streamline secrets management, and clarify & maintain documentation

  • Support network operations, chain state management, automated backups, and maintaining high uptime targets

  • Evaluate and deploy infrastructure tooling, including IaC, container orchestration, and cloud cost monitoring

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3+ years in platform engineering, DevOps, SRE, or related infra roles, ideally in high-growth or startup settings

  • Strong experience with CI/CD systems, including self-hosted runners and cost tracking

  • Deep knowledge of GCP (Cloud Run, Compute Engine, GCS, IAM) or equivalent AWS platforms

  • Skilled in Docker/containerization and orchestration

  • Experience building observability stacks—logging, tracing, alerting (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Datadog, or similar)

  • Familiarity with DNS, TLS, load balancing, and proxy concepts

  • Proficient scripting in Bash, Python, or Go for automation

  • Comfortable working autonomously and prioritizing in a resource-limited environment

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience operating distributed systems (blockchain nodes, database clusters)

  • Familiarity with Cloudflare edge products (Workers, R2, Pages)

  • Experience with secrets management tools such as Doppler, Vault, or AWS Secrets Manager

  • Exposure to blockchain/RPC infrastructure, FinOps, or multi-language dev environments (C, Rust, TypeScript)

WHY JOIN US?

  • Foundational platform role to help define our infra from the ground up

  • Work with top engineers in distributed systems and digital asset infrastructure

  • Be critical to the reliability of a network built for millions of transactions per second

  • High-impact, high-autonomy role where your work unblocks the whole team

  • Access to cutting-edge hardware, dev tools, and resources

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary

  • Significant equity stake with meaningful upside

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage

  • Flexible work environment with unlimited vacation

  • San Francisco–based; in-office presence required

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
