About the Role:

MarketWatch is seeking an ambitious and energetic journalist for its Personal Finance team. The Moneyist, a wildly popular MarketWatch series that delivers clear-headed advice on real-world money dilemmas with empathy, tough love, and expertise. We are looking for someone who can focus specifically on the personal finances of Americans who are navigating money-related conundrums as they graduate college, launch households, work through romantic relationships, build community, deal with aging parents and emerge in their places of work.

MarketWatch casts a wide net in its personal finance coverage. We strive to keep readers informed about core personal finance topics such as credit-card debt, student loans, taxes, mortgage rates, careers and travel, but we also strive to enlighten our audience about new trends related to how people manage — or don't manage — their money.

In addition to writing advice columns answering reader questions, the person in this role will write reported stories on how money affects relationships. Money plays a subtle and not-so-subtle role in our relationships with our families, friends, partners, neighbors and coworkers, as well as strangers. One recent survey showed, for example, that for affluent millennials and members of Gen Z, diverging spending habits and judgment about money ends up being a problem in many friendships.This reporter will identify stories that show how money influences, distorts and enhances our dynamics with loved ones and others.

You Will:

  • Write engaging advice columns answering reader questions on personal finance topics.
  • Anticipate readers' questions about money and address them with insightful, well-researched advice.
  • Report on how money influences relationships, including those with family, friends, partners, and coworkers.
  • Identify and pitch creative, compelling story ideas that explore the emotional and psychological aspects of money.
  • Write polished, clear prose that balances sensitivity with expertise.
  • Be a skilled, insightful, and empathetic interviewer and advice giver.
  • Work well under pressure and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Be meticulous in copy and ambitious in reporting, ensuring accuracy and depth in all coverage.
  • Contribute to MarketWatch's existing portfolio of advice columns on money management, investing, taxes, real estate, and retirement.
  • Provide thoughtful analysis on how financial habits and attitudes shape interpersonal dynamics.

You Have:

  • 3-5 years of reporting experience
  • Fluency in consumer finance and economics
  • A track record of writing unique, engaging financial stories
  • A knack for finding unique angles off the news
  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies

Pay Range: $95,000 - $115,000

Pay-for-performance is a key element in our strategy to attract, engage, and motivate talented people to do their best work. Similarly to salary, for bonus eligible roles, targets are set based on a variety of factors including competitive market practice.
