About Buildkite

At Buildkite, we’re on a mission to unblock every developer on the planet. Our CI/CD platform powers some of the world’s most innovative engineering teams—including Airbnb, Shopify, Lyft, Canva, and PagerDuty. We've reimagined how CI/CD should work: scalable, reliable, and secure for high-performing engineering teams. At Buildkite we have a huge opportunity in front of us so this is a great time to join us in our growth journey.

Job Overview

We are looking for an experienced and strategic People Partner to join our small but mighty People team to help us keep building one of the best SaaS companies in the world. This is a high-trust, high-autonomy role owning all People Partnering across the United States while collaborating with People team peers to develop our people programs and operations. You’ll coach senior leaders, shape long-term workforce strategy, and help build the systems and practices that support our next phase of growth. You’ll work closely with a collaborative, cross-functional team who flex together to get things done - we don’t have large, siloed functions, so collaboration and adaptability are key.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments, loves solving complex people challenges, and wants to help shape the future of work in the age of AI. We’re in build mode and redefining what high performance, aligned teams look like.

What you’ll do

🧠 Strategic Partnership

  • Act as a trusted advisor and coach to US senior leaders, helping them lead through complexity, scale with intention, and create high-performing, values-aligned teams
  • Model inclusive leadership behaviours and play a key role in shaping how we build a high-trust, high-performance culture in a distributed, scaling company, acting as project lead on key initiatives
  • Shape how leaders embed Buildkite’s career expectations and values into hiring, goal-setting, performance feedback and day-to-day delivery through knowledge sharing, relationship building and influence
  • Use data and insights (engagement surveys, turnover trends, performance metrics) to anticipate challenges and recommend proactive solutions that align with the company’s goals to have strategic impact
  • Drive meaningful change initiatives, ensuring alignment, communication, and buy-in at every level

📈 Talent

  • Lead complex cross-functional workstreams across the people team, partnering with peers and business leaders as needed to develop and scale talent programs that bring forward bold ideas
  • Partner with executives to align people strategies with business goals, including workforce planning, organizational design, and talent priorities
  • When required, provide talent acquisition support for open roles, particularly for senior regional hires, ensuring hiring decisions aligned to workforce plans and budgets, plus a smooth candidate experience
  • Help to evolve and guide performance management to ensure clarity, fairness, and a culture of high performance
  • Support career development planning, building scalable programs that empower employees to grow their skills and impact
 ⚖️ Employee Relations & Compliance
  • Serve as a trusted advisor for employees, offering guidance on day-to-day challenges, career growth, and interpersonal dynamics
  • Navigate complex employee relations matters with discretion, fairness, and empathy.
  • Support leaders in navigating complex situations and decisions with confidence and care
  • Ensure compliance with legislation in every country we operate in, specifically the US, staying ahead of regulatory changes
  • Own US employment compliance across all states where we operate, partnering with legal experts where appropriate and updating senior leadership on risks
  • Manage relationships with global employment partners to ensure all employees are safe, supported, and able to thrive

🌐 People Operations

  • Partner with People team peers to collaborate on operations projects to shape and simplify processes and systems that scale with us while keeping things human, practical, and grounded
  • Collaborate with People, Finance and IT teams to ensure a smooth and welcoming onboarding experience for all new hires and offboarding processes for exiting team members
  • Maintain and enhance our HRIS and other People systems to ensure efficient, scalable processes
  • Use insights to spot trends, influence decisions, and drive better outcomes
  • Help leaders interpret signals and metrics in a way that supports both people and performance

💵 Total Rewards

  • Partner with People team to review compensation and benefit offerings against market and budget needs, while ensuring alignment with our high performance culture
  • Oversee benefit program administration, including healthcare and equity
  • Partner with Finance to process payroll bi-monthly
  • Prepare compensation-related documentation such as commission plans, salary review letters, equity agreements etc
You Might Be a Good Fit if You Have:
  • 6-8+ years in a People Partner or equivalent role
  • Proven track record of partnering with and influencing senior leaders to shape people strategies that drive alignment, elevate performance, and deliver measurable business results
  • Extensive knowledge of US employment legislation and best practices, with the ability to provide empathetic, practical guidance without a “HR police” approach
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience partnering on fair assessment, promotion, and career development practices
  • Strong organization and project management skills, capable of managing multiple work streams and priorities effectively
  • You have a team first mindset; you thrive in small, nimble teams where everyone rolls up their sleeves and flexes to support each other
  • Self-motivated and able to thrive in a remote-first environment
  • Experience with HiBob and ADP preferred
  • Talent acquisition experience preferred
  • Total rewards experience preferred
💚 Why join Buildkite?

At Buildkite, we value kindness, autonomy, and collaboration. You’ll be joining a remote-first company at a defining moment, helping shape the systems, culture, and leadership that power our next stage of growth. You’ll have the opportunity to make meaningful, strategic contributions, and to do it in a team that values clarity, care, and a little bit of weirdness 💚

You’ll also have access to a range of benefits designed to support you in doing your best work.

🌈 Equal Opportunity Employer

At Buildkite, we value diversity and celebrate all types of skills, backgrounds, and experiences. We’re dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment and providing reasonable accommodations throughout our recruitment process.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
