Hummingbird is a remote-first, fully distributed team united by the shared mission of helping fight financial crime. Since our launch in 2017, we’ve helped major financial institutions and tech-savvy trailblazers alike (e.g. Stripe, Affirm, Evolve Bank etc.) orchestrate their compliance programs through our thoughtfully designed, intuitive SaaS product. We believe finding and stopping financial crime is a problem rooted in code, language and design, so we built the product that the heroes doing this work deserve.

We are customer-obsessed, and we love building and shipping great products. We set a high bar, challenge our assumptions, seek diverse opinions, and support each other to do our best work.

We do our best to write inclusive, descriptive and accurate job descriptions, but we’re not always perfect. If you’re interested in the role, we’d love to hear from you even if you don’t feel like you meet everything we’re looking for. We’re always iterating and improving, and it’s possible that your experience is even more impactful than we could have imagined.

About the Role

The People Team’s mission is to empower and enable Hummingbird’s workforce to reach their full potential by cultivating a supportive, inclusive and high-performance culture. We help drive growth at the individual and further Hummingbird’s success as a company by attracting, retaining and developing top talent, and implementing the policies and practices needed to succeed. This People Ops hire will be a key member of our small and mighty People team, and will be comfortable shape-shifting between various people ops projects in service of this mission.

What you’re looking to do:

  • CEO support. A unique aspect of this role is directly supporting our CEO. You'll own inbox, calendar and travel management for the CEO of Hummingbird. With this visibility and ownership, you'll be well-positioned to proactively identify inefficiencies and drive solutions to improve company operations.
  • Own and optimize People-related processes across the employee lifecycle. You lead with employee empathy, and you’re interested in augmenting processes from onboarding and offboarding to open enrollment and DEIB initiatives.
  • Create incredible in-person experiences for our fully distributed company. Hummingbird’s fully remote workforce loves having opportunities to meet in person. You’re interested in what it means to gather effectively and how to make the most of time in person.
  • Build programs that focus on meaningful employee engagement and retention. You know how important it is to have a truly engaged employee base in order for a company to be successful. You’re motivated by the opportunity to think creatively and implement programs that drive inclusivity and belonging.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with all types of roles. You'll interact with each and every team at Hummingbird, and you relish the opportunity to get to know all types of individuals.
  • Balance the strategic big picture with the hands-on day to day. You know what it’s like to work in a team where no one person is “above” or “below” a certain project or task. You’re good at viewing things from the 500 foot lens, and then following through to operationalize this view into tactical outputs for both you and the team to execute on.

You are:

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive.
  • Curious about all areas of the People function. You like the idea of getting exposure across the many hats that folks on People teams can wear.
  • Excited about creating superb employee experiences through operational excellence.
  • A natural problem solver who thrives on identifying and implementing solutions
  • Excellent at building relationships across diverse teams.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please don't hesitate to contact us to request accommodation.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
