About Us:

Notion helps you build beautiful tools for your life’s work. In today's world of endless apps and tabs, Notion provides one place for teams to get everything done, seamlessly connecting docs, notes, projects, calendar, and email—with AI built in to find answers and automate work. Millions of users, from individuals to large organizations like Toyota, Figma, and OpenAI, love Notion for its flexibility and choose it because it helps them save time and money.

In-person collaboration is essential to Notion's culture. We require all team members to work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, our designated Anchor Days. Certain teams or positions may require additional in-office workdays.

About the Role:

Notion is in a really exciting growth phase—we're scaling from 1,000 to 2,000+ Notinos (that's what we call ourselves!), and we need someone brilliant to lead our HR Generalists team and own the global employee lifecycle.

This isn't just an operations role—you'll be shaping how we support our people as we grow. Think: building systems that scale, making processes delightful (yes, People Ops can be delightful!), and ensuring we're enterprise-ready while keeping that startup magic alive.

What You'll Achieve:
  • Lead and Develop: Mentor and manage a team of People Ops Generalists, setting clear expectations and creating career development plans that foster growth and excellence

  • Own the Employee Lifecycle: Drive continuous improvement across onboarding, job changes, internal mobility, merit reviews, promotions, bonus processing, and offboarding to ensure seamless experiences

  • Drive Operational Excellence: Leverage technology and AI to build scalable processes, policies, and workflows that support our growing, distributed workforce

  • Champion Enterprise Readiness: Establish audit-ready documentation, implement enhanced internal controls, develop rigorous reporting structures, and build systems that meet enterprise-grade standards for SOC2 and SOX compliance

  • Enable Global Expansion: Research local employment laws, partner with Legal and Finance on entity structures, integrate HR processes for new locations, build localized frameworks, and establish vendor relationships for international operations

  • Manage Contingent Workforce: Oversee the full lifecycle of our contingent workforce program, including processes, policies, and vendor relationships

  • Partner Cross-Functionally: Collaborate with Legal, Finance, IT, and Recruiting to ensure People Ops processes meet compliance standards while maintaining a great employee experience

  • Be a Truth Seeker: Act as a subject matter expert for internal stakeholders on employee lifecycle questions, escalations, special projects, and international expansion

  • Storytelling with Data: Analyze trends, measure success, and drive informed decision-making across all markets using people analytics

Skills You'll Need to Bring:
  • 8+ years of experience in People Operations, including experience scaling from 1,000 to 3,000+ employees in a high-growth tech environment; 2+ years managing a team

  • Deep knowledge of employee lifecycle management best practices and compliance requirements across multiple geographies

  • Strong working knowledge of Workday (HCM) and comfort operating across multiple People tools and systems.

  • Strong understanding of audit requirements and experience implementing internal controls for compliance audits

  • Process-driven with the flexibility to adapt; you know when to hold the line and when to iterate

  • Data-driven approach to decision-making and process improvements

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional partners

  • Track record of developing and mentoring high-performing teams

  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and ability to handle confidential information with discretion

  • You don’t need to be an AI expert, but you’re curious and willing to adopt AI tools to work smarter and deliver better results.

Nice to Haves:
  • Experience supporting global expansion and setting up international entity operations

  • Experience managing contingent workforce programs and vendor relationships

  • Familiarity with HR data analysis and advanced reporting

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
