About the People Team

The People Team at Whatnot is on a mission to make this the most people-centric company in the world. We champion every stage of the employee experience with precision, empathy, and integrity—from onboarding to offboarding, and everything in between.

💻 Role

We’re looking for a People Operations Coordinator to lead onboarding and support the day-to-day workflows that shape the employee experience at Whatnot. This is a great entry point for someone who’s excited to build a strong foundation in People Ops—and finds joy in making the little things feel seamless and human.

You’ll handle everything from pre-hire setup to Day 1 logistics, partner with teams like IT, Legal, People Business Partners, and Recruiting, and be a go-to for employees through our People Helpdesk. If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and love bringing calm to busy moments—especially behind the scenes—you’ll thrive here.

What You'll Do

  • Own onboarding from start to finish. You’ll manage all the moving pieces—from welcome emails and I-9 verifications to shipping swag and coordinating with IT to get laptops delivered on time.

  • Support in-person onboarding moments. While we’re a remote team, you’ll help coordinate any onboarding-related travel and activities at our LA hub, in partnership with the Talent Development team.

  • Partner with teams across the business. You’ll collaborate with People, Finance, IT, Legal, and other departments to support employee processes throughout the full lifecycle—from onboarding to offboarding and everything in between.

  • Keep our systems up to date. You’ll help with data entry in Workday, making sure employee records stay accurate for job changes, departures, and one-time payments.

  • Handle compliance logistics. You’ll process unemployment and workers’ comp claims, track related documentation, and help us stay audit-ready at all times.

  • Be a go-to for employee questions. Through our People Ops Helpdesk, you’ll answer Tier 1 questions and help point folks in the right direction when they need more support.

  • Help us stay organized and audit-ready. You’ll keep an eye on data accuracy, support compliance audits, and make sure important documentation doesn’t slip through the cracks.

  • Jump in on People Ops projects. Whether it’s refreshing content in Slab or helping with employee experience programs, you’ll support projects that make our team run smoother.

Team members in this role are required to be within commuting distance of our Los Angeles or San Francisco hubs.

👋 You

Curious about who thrives at Whatnot? We’ve found that embodying a low ego, growth mindset, and high-impact drive goes a long way here. As our next People Operations Coordinator:

  • You’ve got 1+ years of experience in People Ops, HR coordination, or a similar role—ideally in a fast-paced environment or startup. Bonus points if you’ve supported onboarding.

  • You have hands-on experience with Workday and are comfortable navigating employee records, data entry, and basic workflows.

  • You’re comfortable with tools like Google Workspace, Slack, Zendesk, Navan, and Slab or Notion—or excited to learn your way around them quickly.

  • You’re organized, proactive, and detail-obsessed, but flexible enough to roll with changing priorities.

  • You communicate clearly and kindly, especially over Slack and email—you know how to make people feel seen, even when things are moving fast.

  • You’re curious and eager to learn, with a strong sense of ownership over your work.

  • You’re great at managing tasks independently, but you love working on a team that jumps in to help each other out.

  • You like making things better—whether it’s fixing a broken process or updating a help doc, you notice the small stuff and care enough to improve it.

  • You’re excited about being part of a team that supports every Whatnaut, and you take pride in helping people feel welcome, informed, and supported.

🎁 Benefits
  • Flexible Time off Policy and Company-wide Holidays (including a spring and winter break)

  • Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, Vision

  • Work From Home Support

    • Home office setup allowance

    • Monthly allowance for cell phone and internet

  • Care benefits

    • Monthly allowance for wellness

    • Annual allowance towards Childcare

    • Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses

  • Retirement; 401k offering for Traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and Pension plans internationally

  • Monthly allowance to dogfood the app

    • All Whatnauts are expected to develop a deep understanding of our product. We're passionate about building the best user experience, and all employees are expected to use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller as part of their job (our dogfooding budget makes this fun and easy!).

  • Parental Leave

    • 16 weeks of paid parental leave + one month gradual return to work *company leave allowances run concurrently with country leave requirements which take precedence.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
