The opportunity

As a Patent Paralegal within our Patent department, you will play a critical role in supporting domestic and foreign intellectual property prosecution. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Patent Administration, this position requires expertise in patent law and a keen ability to navigate complex legal procedures.

Success in this role demands proficiency in patent docket management systems—Anaqua experience is preferred—as well as the ability to handle special projects, adapt to shifting priorities, and work efficiently in an evolving legal landscape. Comfort with ambiguity, flexibility in managing deadlines, and the ability to work overtime when needed will be key to excelling in this dynamic environment.

Location: This is a fully remote position. Candidates must be based in the United States.

What you’ll do

  • Review incoming correspondence for accuracy and update our docket management system to ensure data integrity. Prepare reports as requested.
  • Manage USPTO filings and oversee PCT applications, ensuring accuracy and compliance with office requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with global patent prosecution processes across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate closely with internal attorneys, colleagues, and outside counsel to streamline workflows and facilitate effective communication.

The experience you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience as a patent prosecution paralegal, managing a large patent portfolio.
  • Highly detail-oriented, with a strong ability to manage complex filing requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. patent filing rules and regulations, as well as foreign filing procedures across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Expertise in preparing and filing U.S. and PCT patent applications, including provisional, utility, and PCT filings, as well as handling missing parts responses and follow-on correspondence through PatentCenter.
  • Proficiency in both U.S. and foreign patent docketing, with experience tracking deadlines, updating case statuses, monitoring due actions, and generating accurate docket reports (Anaqua experience preferred).
  • Skilled in extracting and analyzing critical information from correspondence and official Patent Office databases worldwide, including USPTO, WIPO, EPO, SIPO, JPO/JPLATT, and KIPO.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with USPTO personnel, attorneys, paralegals, patent agents, engineers, foreign associates, and staff on docketing and prosecution matters.
  • Experience conducting quality assurance reviews for patent filings, identifying potential errors or omissions, and escalating them to attorneys or agents for resolution.
  • Proven ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies related to case details or database inconsistencies with precision and efficiency.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience in both mid-size or large law firms and in-house environments.
  • Experience working in a corporate in-house patent department.
  • At least two years of experience with Anaqua or any other patent docketing system.
  • Completion of a formal intellectual property educational program or certification.

Additional Requirements

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet business needs.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
