Job Description

Why This Role
This is a meaningful leadership role within the enterprise P&C actuarial reserving organization, designed for an actuarial manager who wants to sit close to complex reserve analysis, business decision-making, and the continued modernization of reserving practices.
You will lead actuarial reserving work for Auto Injury coverages, partnering with reserving senior leadership and key business partners to develop, evaluate, and communicate reserve indications, methodologies, and insights. The role requires a strong blend of technical actuarial judgment, analytical discipline, people leadership, and the ability to translate complex results into clear recommendations that support business decisions.
As an Actuarial Manager, you will not only execute core reserving responsibilities, you will help strengthen the craft of reserving through improved methodology, data quality, documentation, tool utilization, and team development. This is a role for someone who can operate independently on complex analyses, guide analysts through high-quality execution, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of a modern reserving function.
We value connected, collaborative experiences with your team and Allstaters across the enterprise, which may require travel within your local area or to one of our offices on a regular basis.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead complex reserving analyses. Develop, apply, and evaluate actuarial reserving methodologies for Auto Injury coverages using accepted actuarial and statistical standards, with a focus on high-quality analysis, sound judgment, and clear business implications.
  • Strengthen reserve decision support. Partner with senior reserving leaders and business stakeholders to develop and execute reserving strategies that support high-complexity reserve analyses and informed decision-making.
  • Ensure data quality and analytical rigor. Select, review, and challenge the data, assumptions, methods, and tools used in moderate to highly complex actuarial analyses, ensuring outputs are reliable, well-supported, and fit for purpose.
  • Translate technical work into clear insights. Review, evaluate, and communicate actuarial results, modeling techniques, and reserve indications in a way that is understandable, actionable, and relevant for leadership and external groups.
  • Guide work across projects and priorities. Plan, manage, and contribute to moderate-to-high complexity projects that may span multiple disciplines, balancing technical quality, timelines, stakeholder needs, and execution discipline.
  • Develop analysts and build team capability. Lead a team of analysts by setting expectations, coaching technical development, reviewing work, and providing input on talent management, development, and team effectiveness.
  • Advance the reserving craft. Contribute technical and thought leadership through improvements to reserving methods, processes, tools, documentation, and analytical approaches, often serving as a subject-matter expert within the team.
  • Apply business and regulatory context. Use knowledge of insurance products, market dynamics, claims trends, and the regulatory environment to inform reserving conclusions and influence appropriate business decisions.

Impact & Exposure

  • This role sits at an important intersection of actuarial analysis, business partnership, and team leadership. Your work will support reserve estimates and explanations used by senior reserving leadership and key business partners, and your ability to communicate clearly will help shape how complex reserve movements, methods, and assumptions are understood.
  • It is a highly visible manager role that requires independent judgment, strong execution, and the ability to influence through technical credibility, clarity, and partnership.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
