Are you a highly skilled and adaptable individual with a passion for optical networking product sales and a proven track record of success? If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy working closely with sales teams to win customer opportunities, we invite you to apply for the Optical Sales Engineer role at Nokia.

In this role, you will support customer engagements, technical solution development, and sales activities for optical transport solutions. You will work closely with customers, particularly optical transport engineers, network planners, and operations teams to understand technical requirements, develop network designs, and support the successful introduction, deployment, and maintenance of optical products and solutions.

This position requires strong communication, presentation, and technical expertise. You will play a key role in developing and communicating the capabilities of Nokia’s optical products, including product features and roadmap considerations. You will also help influence hyperscale customers’ evaluation and selection of Nokia products and future technologies.

If you are ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role with meaningful customers and business impact, we encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the sales teams (sales executives, sales managers, sales engineers) to position optical products within Nokia’s hyperscaler customers. Coach the sales team on identifying and driving optical business to closure.
  • The candidate will assist in translating customer technical needs into viable optical transport solutions, including capacity planning, network innovation, resiliency considerations, and deployment strategy.
  • The Optical Sales Engineer is a key pre-sales role where influence on hyperscalers is leveraged to develop interest and RFx definition around Nokia key product attributes. This position also works closely with PLM, R&D on technology, standardization and roadmap strategies across optical products.
  • Candidate must be able to meet with customer decision makers and communicate verbally the exact details of Nokia’s optical product capabilities and the specific solutions being offered to the customer.
  • Candidate must be able to document network designs and recommendations using presentation tools, like PowerPoint and design tools, like Visio.
  • Candidate must be prepared to feed accurate product development feedback into product line management based on current and anticipated customer requirements.
  • Candidate must conduct technical sales with maximum integrity, ensuring that product capabilities are accurately represented to customers and that Nokia can deliver proposed solutions in the anticipated timeframe.
  • Candidate must have the ability to work cross-functionally with product, engineering, deployment, operations, and support teams.
  • Candidate must be extremely flexible, often juggling multiple challenges and active customer engagements
Qualifications

You have

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of extensive relevant experience in the semiconductor, photonics, or optical communications industry, with a focus on complex technical products for hyperscalers.
  • Photonics Knowledge: Deep understanding of photonics components, optical modules, and related technologies. Experience with high-speed optical communication systems, coherent DSP and a deep understanding of optical system overall performance.
  • Customer-Centric: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with customers at all levels, from technical engineers and non-technical associates both externally and internally.
  • Problem Solver: Solves highly complex technical risks (EG solution roadmap availability) with mitigation plans and innovative solutions which generate broad impact on business.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel up to 25% to meet customers, attend industry events, and engage with potential clients.

It would be nice if also you had:

  • Expertise in the hyperscale ecosystem including high-performance IP routing markets and an understanding of Artificial Intelligence networking requirements.
  • Hyperscaler subsea segment experience including previous support on subsea cable trials and commissioning
  • Familiarity with optical module industry standards (e.g., OIF, IEEE, ITU).
  • Network of industry contacts and established relationships with key players in the photonics, data center, and telecom sectors.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
