Want to challenge yourself at a high-growth global business AND make a difference in the world?

A bit about us:

Who Gives a Crap sells beautiful, forest friendly toilet paper, paper towels and tissues and we donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for those in need. As much as we love toilet paper, the reason we’re in business is the impact we’re having on the world—to date we’ve donated $2,500,000 to our charity partners to fund sanitation projects in developing countries, and with your help we’re hoping to grow our impact 10-fold in the next couple of years..

We're one of the fastest growing ecommerce businesses in Australia, and are now aggressively entering the North American and European markets, with insanely ambitious growth targets for this year and beyond. We currently have a team of about 60 people working out of Melbourne, Manilla, Los Angeles and China. We’re never happy with the status quo, though, so we’re planning to double or triple our team in the next year, and we won’t stop growing until everyone in the world has access to a toilet.

Today, we manufacture and ship toe-curling volumes of toilet paper and tissue products from our manufacturing base in China. We have a team on the ground who manage a tight ground of manufacturing partners across 3 provinces. As we grow, we continue to identify, qualify and expand our supply base and we’re currently seeing opportunities in the US and UK in our crystal ball. Increasingly, that will mean responding to macro economic trends and taking into account our growth projections to optimise the fit. Excitingly, we plan to expand into new categories in the coming years which will require further product, supplier, team and geographical diversification.

A bit about the role:

We’re on a rocket ship growing at incredible speed and are now looking for a Head of Production who can keep fuelling the engine and take us into our next stage of growth. You’ll take the reigns over our global production and sourcing strategy, ensuring it runs smoothly whilst improving our production quality, capacity, partnerships and social and environmental impact. Oh, wow. Time for a breather.

You will represent Production in our broader Supply Chain Team and Planning Teams and report into our VP Supply Chain. Heading up our production team, you’ll be leading and executing our global production strategy. You’ll create our roadmap for producing existing and future products, set priorities and scale our team for growth. You’ll help us evolve processes and systems to ensure a kick-ass operation that is more proactive than reactive, and ensures we ship thousands of tonnes of forest-friendly paper products every year in a way that feels manageable. You’ll manage our Production Manager, China who mentors our team on-the-ground, ensuring we have deep factory relationships, making great product in an ethical and sustainable way.

Production is not an island, you’ll also work closely with teams across the business to ensure that we can meet demand, and help unlock new ways of delivering delight to our customers through our products.

Location, location, location
This role could be based in our office in Melbourne, in Los Angeles or remotely from Hong Kong. So long as you know your way around a webcam and you’re up for regular international travel then we’re open to making it work.

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

  • Attended the quarterly Planning Team meeting, setting the Production Functions Objectives and Key Results for the next quarter

  • Went on an epic trip through China, visiting our key suppliers during which you

    • Renegotiated core product pricing

    • Re-negotiated supplier contracts

    • Negotiated extra capacity with existing suppliers

    • Visited, assessed and negotiated with new factories for short-term qualification

    • Visited partners with your 2020 supply base evolution in mind

  • Put your firefighting gear on and led key recommendations to our business, based on a short-term supply issue caused by late shipments from our supplier

  • Supported our New Product Development Team during the design phase of a potential product expansion (top secret stuff!)

  • Supported a strategic decision about channel expansion by providing the insight for production capacity, pricing and product format changes which were central to that decision as well as creating a model to quickly estimate prices for different product specs

  • Designed a plan to get us through the Chinese New Year Production plan and led recommendations to the business on how to overcome the shortage of supply during that period

  • Designed a New Supplier Sourcing process with the objective of making our manufacturer identification, qualification and onboarding process more systematic, faster and lower risk

  • Negotiated a deal to buy data to better understand our cost drivers

  • Collaborated with our Growth and Finance Team to evolve our our factory capacity planning process, having established that our previous system had not been working to effectively plan our production capacity to meet our growth requirements

Let’s talk about you

You’re a superstar communicator
You know what it takes to act as a conduit between globally dispersed internal teams and external producers and supply chain partners. You’re fluent in spoken and written English. Spoken Mandarin or Cantonese is a great plus, but not essential. Do you also speak Chamicuro? Hey, even better!

You <3 China, but you aren’t exclusive
You’re experienced in leading production in China, including sourcing and qualifying partners, negotiating contracts and implementing production systems. You know the nitty gritty nuances that come with the territory, in fact, you love them! But you two aren’t in an exclusive relationship and you’re comfortable spreading the production and sourcing love globally.

You see meaning in numbers
You’ve got a deep understanding of pricing drivers, as well as the macro environment of the markets in which our products are made and sold. You’re comfortable taking the lead on contract negotiations and take pride in cutting deals which work on both sides.

You pave the way for people and the plan
You’ve had plenty of experience defining and driving strategic roadmaps and you also know how to steer everyone in the right direction. You are comfortable and skilled at leading a global team and working cross-functionally to ensure everyone is engaged, effective and enjoying themselves. Your crystal ball vision helps you stay a few steps ahead and you proactively seek to fill gaps in your knowledge to understand what might lie ahead

You give a crap
You’re passionate about the role you can play in driving environmental and social change that benefits our planet. You care deeply about the people you work with, and it shows.

Yep. We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too! Awwww.

Why you should work with us

Every minute you spend working with us, you’re making a difference. The more we grow, the bigger an impact we’ll have. Sell your soul no longer! We think that’s a pretty great perk, but we don’t stop there…

If you have a great idea, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. This is the kind of role that will be hard to find anywhere else: you’ll work with an incredible bunch of passionate people to grow a fast-paced startup at a crucial point in its trajectory.

The job is also amazingly flexible, something we’re working hard to hold onto even as we grow super quickly. We started the business remotely, and now have hubs in 4 cities around the world. Our team’s spend a few days a week together in their coworking spaces but you can also mix it up and work in your PJs from home or set up office at the local cafe, up to you! And while we don’t have a Friday drinks cart (yet), you will get free toilet paper. A lot of it. And nothing beats that.

Lastly, you get to say the word ‘crap’ more than in any other job. Guaranteed.

Salary
This depends on your experience but just because we’re a social enterprise doesn’t mean you’ll get paid peanuts. Think chocolate covered macadamia nuts with some extra perks thrown in. In other words, we pay competitively and are determined to make this the best job you'll ever have – you won’t ever want to leave!

On top of the normal perks like annual leave, we also provide flexibility to take extra unpaid leave or travel while working, we provide a health insurance stipend, generous parental leave, training and development budget and a whole lot of other stuff. And did we mention the free toilet paper?
