We are hiring our first ever Development Lead to help us realize our mission to better the lives of animals by building a place that’s better for all of us who love them. This role will be responsible for building functional, efficient, and beautiful Modern Animal clinics with as much attention to detail and care as our team brings to every pet and client we serve. 


The lead in this role will have deep specific expertise in real estate design, permitting, procurement, construction, opening, and maintenance, have excellent project management and communication skills, and thrive in a cross-functional environment. 


In this role, we are looking for a leader who is passionate about pets and the people who love them, and is excited about rolling up their sleeves to bring our mission to life as we grow. This role will require travel sufficient to deliver on our clinic development objectives (up to +/- 50%).

What the job entails:

  • Driving selection of general contractors, architects, engineers, and other vendors, and manage them closely to ensure projects are at high quality, on schedule, and on budget
  • Procuring permits expediently and developing relationships and strategies with regulatory departments and consultants ensuring we meet all requirements
  • Developing and executing strategies to deliver efficient and effective construction, balancing our brand and functional requirements with business requirements
  • Communicating project status and priorities with written and oral summaries and detailed reports (including project schedules and milestones) to all relevant leaders and teams, keeping us tightly coordinated and focused
  • Partnering with real estate team to help negotiate leases and perform due diligence on sites, ensuring that design and construction considerations are taken into account
  • Partnering with clinical, product, and brand teams to develop, iterate, and maintain standards and specifications that ensure performance and consistency of new clinics
  • Partnering with clinic, people, and marketing teams to ensure smooth, strong openings
  • Partnering cross-functionally and collaboratively across teams internally and externally, building trusting relationships and a cohesive culture

Why you’d be a great fit:

  • 8+ years of real estate development management experience in a multi-unit environment, managing 6+ simultaneous projects (across multiple cities preferred)
  • 4+ years experience leading design, construction, and related teams
  • Collaborative go-getter, willing to roll-up sleeves and be hands-on
  • Enthusiasm for thinking outside the box to tackle complex problems
  • Set and deliver on targets with ease
  • Exceptional organization skills & ability to manage multiple project simultaneously
  • Detail oriented and strategic, sweating the small stuff but also seeing the big picture, and able to easily assess the state of progress for projects and how best to accelerate
  • Exhilarated by a high-paced, fast-changing and sometimes unpredictable environment
  • Operate with high emotional intelligence and exceptional communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of CAD drawings, Slack, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office Systems
  • Ability to create initial test fits and construction sketches on own preferred
  • Degree in architecture, engineering, or other relevant field preferred
