Company Description

Founded in the Queensland outback in 1920, Qantas has grown to be Australia’s largest regional, domestic, and international airline. Qantas has a range of subsidiary businesses that support the overall operations of the Group. The Qantas Group’s main business is the transportation of customers and freight using two complementary airline brands — Qantas and Jetstar — operating regional, domestic, and international services.

Job Description

  • Be at the frontline of safety in aviation—working directly with operational teams where risk is real and decisions matter
  • Influence meaningful change by embedding practical safety solutions across fast-paced, high-traffic environments
  • Permanent full-time position based in Los Angeles
  • $95,000 - $110,000 USD per annum

Our offshore ports each have a personality of their own. When you’re part of the offshore Qantas family, you might be physically apart but you’re still a close part of our team. Airports are the heart of our operation. It’s here people connect with the spirit of Australia from the confidence of seeing and interacting with our people, to the sheer awe that comes from watching our aircraft take off and land. We see it as our responsibility to take ownership and drive outcomes, taking the organization forward.

As an Operational and People Safety Advisor – Americas, you’ll play a key role in keeping people, operations and environments safe across Qantas Airways’ high-risk, fast-paced operational network.

Working closely with frontline teams, supervisors and leaders, you’ll be responsible for identifying and managing risk, leading investigations, and embedding practical safety solutions where they matter most—on the ground. This is a hands-on advisory role where your ability to influence, build trust and drive behavioural change will directly impact safety outcomes across diverse operational environments.

You’ll partner with the business to strengthen safety culture, improve reporting and governance, and ensure safety practices are not only compliant, but genuinely effective in day-to-day operations.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Safety or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in an Occupational Safety and Health role and demonstrate a record of delivering improvement, ideally within an aviation or operational environment.
  • Strong capability in incident investigations, risk management and safety systems, with the ability to translate theory into practical action
  • A demonstrated ability to build credibility and influence at all levels, from frontline crews through to senior leadership
  • A hands-on, operational mindset—comfortable being out on the floor (or airside), not just behind a desk
  • Strong judgement and confidence to challenge behaviours and drive change in a constructive, pragmatic way
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn insights into action
  • Sound understanding of WHS/OHS legislation and regulatory frameworks

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
